Update the definition and callers of string_list_insert to use the
string_list as the first argument. This helps make the string_list
API easier to use by being more consistent.

which doesn't seem all that different, but not having that annoying
break in "Display all 180 possibilities?" is quite a relief.
NOTE! If you do this in a clean tree (no object files etc), or using an
editor that has auto-completion rules that ignores '*.o' files, you
won't see that annoying 'Display all 180 possibilities?' message - it
will just show the choices instead. I think bash has some cut-off
around 100 choices or something.
So the reason I see this is that I'm using an odd editory, and thus
don't have the rules to cut down on auto-completion. But you can
simulate that by using 'ls' instead, or something similar.

It is not that uncommon to have mails with DOS line-ending, notably
Thunderbird and web mailers like Gmail (when saving what they call
"original" message). So modify mailsplit to convert CRLF line-endings to
just LF.
Since git-rebase is built on top of git-am, add an option to mailsplit to
be used by git-am when it is acting on behalf of git-rebase, to refrain
from doing this conversion.
And add a test to make sure that rebase still works.

Lots of die() calls did not actually report the kind of error, which
can leave the user confused as to the real problem. Use die_errno()
where we check a system/library call that sets errno on failure, or
one of the following that wrap such calls:

The name path_list was correct for the first usage of that data structure,
but it really is a general-purpose string list.

When you misuse a git command, you are shown the usage string.
But this is currently shown in the dashed form. So if you just
copy what you see, it will not work, when the dashed form
is no longer supported.
This patch makes git commands show the dash-less version.
For shell scripts that do not specify OPTIONS_SPEC, git-sh-setup.sh
generates a dash-less usage string now.

The function fgets() has a big problem with NUL characters: it reads
them, but nobody will know if the NUL comes from the file stream, or
was appended at the end of the line.
So implement a custom read_line_with_nul() function.

When saving patches to a maildir with e.g. mutt, the files are put into
the new/ subdirectory of the maildir, not cur/. This makes git-am state
"Nothing to do.". This patch lets git-mailsplit additional check new/
after reading cur/.

Earlier commit d63bd9a broke the case where more than one input
files are fed to mailsplit by not incrementing the base counter
when splitting second and subsequent input files. This should
fix it.

This is a mechanical clean-up of the way *.c files include
system header files.
(1) sources under compat/, platform sha-1 implementations, and
xdelta code are exempt from the following rules;
(2) the first #include must be "git-compat-util.h" or one of
our own header file that includes it first (e.g. config.h,
builtin.h, pkt-line.h);
(3) system headers that are included in "git-compat-util.h"
need not be included in individual C source files.
(4) "git-compat-util.h" does not have to include subsystem
specific header files (e.g. expat.h).

Do not open mailbox file as fopen(..., "rt")
as this strips CR characters from the diff,
thus breaking the patch context for changes

This allows git-am to accept single-message files as well as mboxes.
Unlike the previous version, this one doesn't need to be explicitly told
which one it is; rather, it looks to see if the first line is a From
line and uses it to select mbox mode or not.
I moved the logic to do all this into git-mailsplit, which got a new
user interface as result, although the old interface is still available
for backwards compatibility.

Do our own ctype.h, just to get the sane semantics: we want
locale-independence, _and_ we want the right signed behaviour. Plus we
only use a very small subset of ctype.h anyway (isspace, isalpha,
isdigit and isalnum).

Since some platforms do not support mmap() at all, and others do only just
so, this patch introduces the option to fake mmap() and munmap() by
malloc()ing and read()ing explicitely.

Also make platform specific part more isolated. Currently we only
have Darwin defined, but I've taken a look at SunOS specific patch
(which I dropped on the floor for now) as well. Doing things this way
would make adding it easier.

I have reviewed all occurrences of mmap() in git and fixed three types
of errors/defects:
1) The result is not checked.
2) The file descriptor is closed if mmap() succeeds, but not when it
fails.
3) Various casts applied to -1 are used instead of MAP_FAILED, which is
specifically defined to check mmap() return value.

that close() potentially clobbering the errno from mmap, which
the first round had.]

Rename into a "tools" subdirectory, and change name of "dotest" to "applymbox".
Remove stripspace (which was already copied into git) and cvs2git (which
was likewise already copied into git, and then replaced by a much better
perl version).
All of this was brought on by Ryan Anderson shaming me into it. Thanks.

I looked a bit at my old BK tools for the same thing, but they were
just so horrid in many ways that I largely rewrote it all and these
tools do things a bit differently. Instead of aggressively piping
data from one process to another (which was clever but very hard
to follow), this first just splits out the mbox into many smaller
email files, and then does some scripts on these temporary files.
