Fix typos in documentation, code comments, and RelNotes which repeat
various words. In trivial cases, just delete the duplicated word and
rewrap text, if needed. Reword the affected sentence in
Documentation/RelNotes/1.8.4.txt for it to make sense.

There were some early changes in the 2.31 cycle to optimize some setup
in diffcore-rename.c[1], some later changes to measure performance[2],
and finally some significant changes to improve rename detection
performance. The final one was merged with the note
Performance optimization work on the rename detection continues.
That works for the commit log, but feels misleading as a release note
since all the changes were within one cycle. Simplify this to just
Performance improvements for rename detection.
The former wording could be seen as hinting that more performance
improvements will come in 2.32, which is true, but we can just cover
those in the 2.32 release notes when the time comes.

With the two-patch series for regression fix, to the users from 2.27
days, there is no visible behaviour change---we do not warn and fail
use of v0 repositories with newer extensions yet, so there is nothing
to note in the backward compatibility section.

are definitely not in active use, they might be of historical interest

Replace links to Gmane with links to lore.kernel.org (which is our new
preferred mailing list archive and has the Message-ID in the URL) and
bare Gmane ID references with Message-IDs.
The Message-IDs were found by searching for "gmane:<id>" on
https://public-inbox.org/git/ and taking the resulting message.

The internal code originally invented for ".gitignore" processing
got reshuffled and renamed to make it less tied to "excluding" and
stress more that it is about "matching", as it has been reused for
things like sparse checkout specification that want to check if a
path is "included".

The first consumer of pattern-matching filenames was the
.gitignore feature. In that context, storing a list of patterns
as a 'struct exclude_list' makes sense. However, the
sparse-checkout feature then adopted these structures and methods,
but with the opposite meaning: these patterns match the files
that should be included!
It would be clearer to rename this entire library as a "pattern
matching" library, and the callers apply exclusion/inclusion
logic accordingly based on their needs.
This commit renames several methods defined in dir.h to make
more sense with the renamed 'struct exclude_list' to 'struct
pattern_list' and 'struct exclude' to 'struct path_pattern':
* last_exclude_matching() -> last_matching_pattern()
* parse_exclude() -> parse_path_pattern()
In addition, the word 'exclude' was replaced with 'pattern'
in the methods below:
* add_exclude_list()
* add_excludes_from_file_to_list()
* add_excludes_from_file()
* add_excludes_from_blob_to_list()
* add_exclude()
* clear_exclude_list()
A few methods with the word "exclude" remain. These will
be handled seperately. In particular, the method
"is_excluded()" is concretely about the .gitignore file
relative to a specific directory. This is the important
boundary between library and consumer: is_excluded() cares
about .gitignore, but is_excluded() calls
last_matching_pattern() to make that decision.

Hotfix for making "git log" use the mailmap by default.

It turns out that being cautious to warn against upcoming default
change was an unpopular behaviour, and such a care can easily be
defeated by distro packagers to render it ineffective anyway.
Just flip the default, with only a mention in the release notes.
