John Cai e8207717f1 refs: add referent to each_ref_fn
Add a parameter to each_ref_fn so that callers to the ref APIs
that use this function as a callback can have acess to the
unresolved value of a symbolic ref.

Patrick Steinhardt fa0f27a19d submodule: fix leaking seen submodule names
We keep track of submodules we have already seen via a string map such
that we don't process the same submodule twice. We never free that map
though, causing a memory leak.

Fix this leak by clearing the map.

Patrick Steinhardt 1a7e5efdb0 submodule: fix leaking fetch tasks
When done with a fetch task used for parallel fetches of submodules, we
need to both call `fetch_task_release()` to release the task's contents
and `free()` to release the task itself. Most sites do this already, but
some only call `fetch_task_release()` and thus leak memory.

While we could trivially fix this by adding the two missing calls to
free(3P), the result would be that we always call both functions. Let's
thus refactor the code such that `fetch_task_release()` also frees the
structure itself. Rename it to `fetch_task_free()` accordingly.

Patrick Steinhardt e7da938570 global: introduce `USE_THE_REPOSITORY_VARIABLE` macro
Use of the `the_repository` variable is deprecated nowadays, and we
slowly but steadily convert the codebase to not use it anymore. Instead,
callers should be passing down the repository to work on via parameters.

It is hard though to prove that a given code unit does not use this
variable anymore. The most trivial case, merely demonstrating that there
is no direct use of `the_repository`, is already a bit of a pain during
code reviews as the reviewer needs to manually verify claims made by the
patch author. The bigger problem though is that we have many interfaces
that implicitly rely on `the_repository`.

Introduce a new `USE_THE_REPOSITORY_VARIABLE` macro that allows code
units to opt into usage of `the_repository`. The intent of this macro is
to demonstrate that a certain code unit does not use this variable
anymore, and to keep it from new dependencies on it in future changes,
be it explicit or implicit

For now, the macro only guards `the_repository` itself as well as
`the_hash_algo`. There are many more known interfaces where we have an
implicit dependency on `the_repository`, but those are not guarded at
the current point in time. Over time though, we should start to add
guards as required (or even better, just remove them).

Define the macro as required in our code units. As expected, most of our
code still relies on the global variable. Nearly all of our builtins
rely on the variable as there is no way yet to pass `the_repository` to
their entry point. For now, declare the macro in "biultin.h" to keep the
required changes at least a little bit more contained.

Patrick Steinhardt 7abbca0e74 hash: require hash algorithm in `empty_tree_oid_hex()`
The `empty_tree_oid_hex()` function use `the_repository` to derive the
hash function that shall be used. Require callers to pass in the hash
algorithm to get rid of this implicit dependency.

While at it, remove the unused `empty_blob_oid_hex()` function.

Patrick Steinhardt 965f8991e5 refs: pass repo when retrieving submodule ref store
Looking up submodule ref stores has two deficiencies:

  - The initialized subrepo will be attributed to `the_repository`.

  - The submodule ref store will be tracked in a global map.

This makes it impossible to have submodule ref stores for a repository
other than `the_repository`.

Modify the function to accept the parent repository as parameter and
move the global map into `struct repository`. Like this it becomes
possible to look up submodule ref stores for arbitrary repositories.

Note that this also adds a new reference to `the_repository` in
`resolve_gitlink_ref()`, which is part of the refs interfaces. This will
get adjusted in the next patch.

Johannes Schindelin e8d0608944 submodule: require the submodule path to contain directories only
Submodules are stored in subdirectories of their superproject. When
these subdirectories have been replaced with symlinks by a malicious
actor, all kinds of mayhem can be caused.

This _should_ not be possible, but many CVEs in the past showed that
_when_ possible, it allows attackers to slip in code that gets executed
during, say, a `git clone --recursive` operation.

Let's add some defense-in-depth to disallow submodule paths to have
anything except directories in them.

Filip Hejsek 9cf8547320 clone: prevent clashing git dirs when cloning submodule in parallel
While it is expected to have several git dirs within the `.git/modules/`
tree, it is important that they do not interfere with each other. For
example, if one submodule was called "captain" and another submodule
"captain/hooks", their respective git dirs would clash, as they would be
located in `.git/modules/captain/` and `.git/modules/captain/hooks/`,
respectively, i.e. the latter's files could clash with the actual Git
hooks of the former.

To prevent these clashes, and in particular to prevent hooks from being
written and then executed as part of a recursive clone, we introduced
checks as part of the fix for CVE-2019-1387 in a8dee3ca61 (Disallow
dubiously-nested submodule git directories, 2019-10-01).

It is currently possible to bypass the check for clashing submodule
git dirs in two ways:

1. parallel cloning
2. checkout --recurse-submodules

Let's check not only before, but also after parallel cloning (and before
checking out the submodule), that the git dir is not clashing with
another one, otherwise fail. This addresses the parallel cloning issue.

As to the parallel checkout issue: It requires quite a few manual steps
to create clashing git dirs because Git itself would refuse to
initialize the inner one, as demonstrated by the test case.

Nevertheless, let's teach the recursive checkout (namely, the
`submodule_move_head()` function that is used by the recursive checkout)
to be careful to verify that it does not use a clashing git dir, and if
it does, disable it (by deleting the `HEAD` file so that subsequent Git
calls won't recognize it as a git dir anymore).

Note: The parallel cloning test case contains a `cat err` that proved to
be highly useful when analyzing the racy nature of the operation (the
operation can fail with three different error messages, depending on
timing), and was left on purpose to ease future debugging should the
need arise.

Ralph Seichter 42d5c03394 config: add --comment option to add a comment
Introduce the ability to append comments to modifications
made using git-config. Example usage:

git config --comment "changed via script" \
    --add safe.directory /home/alice/repo.git

based on the proposed patch, the output produced is:

  [safe]
    directory = /home/alice/repo.git #changed via script

Users need to be able to distinguish between config entries made
using automation and entries made by a human. Automation can add
comments containing a URL pointing to explanations for the change
made, avoiding questions from users as to why their config file
was changed by a third party.

The implementation ensures that a # character is unconditionally
prepended to the provided comment string, and that the comment
text is appended as a suffix to the changed key-value-pair in the
same line of text. Multi-line comments (i.e. comments containing
linefeed) are rejected as errors, causing Git to exit without
making changes.

Comments are aimed at humans who inspect or change their Git
config using a pager or editor. Comments are not meant to be
read or displayed by git-config at a later time.

The `merge_bases_many()` function was just taught to indicate parsing

Naturally, there are a lot of callers that need to be adjusted now, too.

Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 9e2d884d0f config API: add "string" version of *_value_multi(), fix segfaults
Fix numerous and mostly long-standing segfaults in consumers of
the *_config_*value_multi() API. As discussed in the preceding commit
an empty key in the config syntax yields a "NULL" string, which these
users would give to strcmp() (or similar), resulting in segfaults.

As this change shows, most users users of the *_config_*value_multi()
API didn't really want such an an unsafe and low-level API, let's give
them something with the safety of git_config_get_string() instead.

This fix is similar to what the *_string() functions and others
acquired in[1] and [2]. Namely introducing and using a safer
"*_get_string_multi()" variant of the low-level "_*value_multi()"
function.

This fixes segfaults in code introduced in:

  - d811c8e17c (versionsort: support reorder prerelease suffixes, 2015-02-26)
  - c026557a37 (versioncmp: generalize version sort suffix reordering, 2016-12-08)

  - 92156291ca (log: add default decoration filter, 2022-08-05)
  - 50a044f1e4 (gc: replace config subprocesses with API calls, 2022-09-27)

There are now two users ofthe low-level API:

- One in "builtin/for-each-repo.c", which we'll convert in a
  subsequent commit.

- The "t/helper/test-config.c" code added in [3].

As seen in the preceding commit we need to give the
"t/helper/test-config.c" caller these "NULL" entries.

We could also alter the underlying git_configset_get_value_multi()
function to be "string safe", but doing so would leave no room for
other variants of "*_get_value_multi()" that coerce to other types.

Such coercion can't be built on the string version, since as we've
established "NULL" is a true value in the boolean context, but if we
coerced it to "" for use in a list of strings it'll be subsequently
coerced to "false" as a boolean.

The callback pattern being used here will make it easy to introduce
e.g. a "multi" variant which coerces its values to "bool", "int",
"path" etc.

Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason a428619309 config API: have *_multi() return an "int" and take a "dest"
Have the "git_configset_get_value_multi()" function and its siblings
return an "int" and populate a "**dest" parameter like every other
git_configset_get_*()" in the API.

As we'll take advantage of in subsequent commits, this fixes a blind
spot in the API where it wasn't possible to tell whether a list was
empty from whether a config key existed. For now we don't make use of
those new return values, but faithfully convert existing API users.

Most of this is straightforward, commentary on cases that stand out:

- To ensure that we'll properly use the return values of this function
in the future we're using the "RESULT_MUST_BE_USED" macro introduced
  in [1].

As git_die_config() now has to handle this return value let's have
it BUG() if it can't find the config entry. As tested for in a
preceding commit we can rely on getting the config list in
  git_die_config().

- The loops after getting the "list" value in "builtin/gc.c" could
also make use of "unsorted_string_list_has_string()" instead of using
that loop, but let's leave that for now.

- In "versioncmp.c" we now use the return value of the functions,
instead of checking if the lists are still non-NULL.

Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 4002ec3dcf read-tree: add "--super-prefix" option, eliminate global
The "--super-prefix" option to "git" was initially added in [1] for
use with "ls-files"[2], and shortly thereafter "submodule--helper"[3]
and "grep"[4]. It wasn't until [5] that "read-tree" made use of it.

At the time [5] made sense, but since then we've made "ls-files"
recurse in-process in [6], "grep" in [7], and finally
"submodule--helper" in the preceding commits.

Let's also remove it from "read-tree", which allows us to remove the
option to "git" itself.

We can do this because the only remaining user of it is the submodule
API, which will now invoke "read-tree" with its new "--super-prefix"
option. It will only do so when the "submodule_move_head()" function
is called.

That "submodule_move_head()" function was then only invoked by
"read-tree" itself, but now rather than setting an environment
variable to pass "--super-prefix" between cmd_read_tree() we:

- Set a new "super_prefix" in "struct unpack_trees_options". The
"super_prefixed()" function in "unpack-trees.c" added in [5] will now
use this, rather than get_super_prefix() looking up the environment
variable we set earlier in the same process.

- Add the same field to the "struct checkout", which is only needed to
ferry the "super_prefix" in the "struct unpack_trees_options" all the
way down to the "entry.c" callers of "submodule_move_head()".

Those calls which used the super prefix all originated in
"cmd_read_tree()". The only other caller is the "unlink_entry()"
caller in "builtin/checkout.c", which now passes a "NULL".

Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason bb61a962d2 submodule--helper: don't use global --super-prefix in "absorbgitdirs"
The "--super-prefix" facility was introduced in [1] has always been a
transitory hack, which is why we've made it an error to supply it as
an option to "git" to commands that don't know about it.

That's been a good goal, as it has a global effect we haven't wanted
calls to get_super_prefix() from built-ins we didn't expect.

But it has meant that when we've had chains of different built-ins
using it all of the processes in that "chain" have needed to support
it, and worse processes that don't need it have needed to ask for
"SUPPORT_SUPER_PREFIX" because their parent process needs it.

That's how "fsmonitor--daemon" ended up with it, per [2] it's called
from (among other things) "submodule--helper absorbgitdirs", but as we
declared "submodule--helper" as "SUPPORT_SUPER_PREFIX" we needed to
declare "fsmonitor--daemon" as accepting it too, even though it
doesn't care about it.

But in the case of "absorbgitdirs" it only needed "--super-prefix" to
invoke itself recursively, and we'd never have another "in-between"
process in the chain. So we didn't need the bigger hammer of "git
--super-prefix", and the "setenv(GIT_SUPER_PREFIX_ENVIRONMENT, ...)"
that it entails.

Let's instead accept a hidden "--super-prefix" option to
"submodule--helper absorbgitdirs" itself.

Eventually (as with all other "--super-prefix" users) we'll want to
clean this code up so that this all happens in-process. I.e. needing
any variant of "--super-prefix" is itself a hack around our various
global state, and implicit reliance on "the_repository". This stepping
stone makes such an eventual change easier, as we'll need to deal with
less global state at that point.

The "fsmonitor--daemon" test adjusted here was added in [3]. To assert
that it didn't run into the "--super-prefix" message it was asserting
the output it didn't have. Let's instead assert the full output that
we *do* have, using the same pattern as a preceding change to
"t/t7412-submodule-absorbgitdirs.sh" used.

We could also remove the test entirely (as [4] did), but even though
the initial reason for having it is gone we're still getting some
marginal benefit from testing the "fsmonitor" and "submodule
absorbgitdirs" interaction, so let's keep it.

The change here to have either a NULL or non-"" string as a
"super_prefix" instead of the previous arrangement of "" or non-"" is
somewhat arbitrary. We could also decide to never have to check for
NULL.

As we'll be changing the rest of the "git --super-prefix" users to the
same pattern, leaving them all consistent makes sense. Why not pick ""
over NULL? Because that's how the "prefix" works[5], and having
"prefix" and "super_prefix" work the same way will be less
confusing. That "prefix" picked NULL instead of "" is itself
arbitrary, but as it's easy to make this small bit of our overall API
consistent, let's go with that.

Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason f0a5e5ad57 submodule.c & submodule--helper: pass along "super_prefix" param
Start passing the "super_prefix" along as a parameter to
get_submodule_displaypath() and absorb_git_dir_into_superproject(),
rather than get the value directly as a global.

This is in preparation for subsequent commits, where we'll gradually
phase out get_super_prefix() for an alternative way of getting the
"super_prefix".

Most of the users of this get a get_super_prefix() value, either
directly or by indirection. The exceptions are:

- builtin/rm.c: Doesn't declare SUPPORT_SUPER_PREFIX, so we'd have
died if this was provided, so it's safe to pass "NULL".

- deinit_submodule(): The "deinit_submodule()" function has never been
able to use the "git -super-prefix". It will call
"absorb_git_dir_into_superproject()", but it will only do so from the
  top-level project.

If "absorbgitdirs" recurses will use the "path" passed to
  "absorb_git_dir_into_superproject()" in "deinit_submodule()" as its
starting "--super-prefix". So we can safely remove the
get_super_prefix() call here, and pass NULL instead.

225e8bf778 ("push: add option to push only submodules", 2016-12-20).
For users who use this feature regularly, it is desirable to have an
equivalent configuration.

It turns out that such a configuration (push.recurseSubmodules=only) is
already supported, even though it is neither documented nor mentioned
in the commit messages, due to the way the --recurse-submodules=only
feature was implemented (a function used to parse --recurse-submodules
was updated to support "only", but that same function is used to parse
push.recurseSubmodules too). What is left is to document it and test it,
which is what this commit does.

There is a possible point of confusion when recursing into a submodule
that itself has the push.recurseSubmodules=only configuration, because
if a repository has only its submodules pushed and not itself, its
superproject can never be pushed. Therefore, treat such configurations
as being "on-demand", and print a warning message.

was refactored to take a "struct run_process_parallel_opts" argument,
since the only reason for "run_processes_parallel_tr2()" to exist was
to take arguments that are now a part of that struct we can do away
with it.

See ee4512ed48 (trace2: create new combined trace facility,
2019-02-22) for the addition of the "*_tr2()" variant of the function,
it was used by every caller except "t/helper/test-run-command.c"..

Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason b9dd63ffe2 submodule API: don't handle SM_..{UNSPECIFIED,COMMAND} in to_string()
Change the submodule_strategy_to_string() function added in
3604242f08 (submodule: port init from shell to C, 2016-04-15) to
really return a "const char *". In the "SM_UPDATE_COMMAND" case it
would return a strbuf_detach().

Furthermore, this function would return NULL on SM_UPDATE_UNSPECIFIED,
so it wasn't safe to xstrdup() its return value in the general case,
or to use it in a sprintf() format as the code removed in the
preceding commit did.

But its callers would never call it with either SM_UPDATE_UNSPECIFIED
or SM_UPDATE_COMMAND. Let's have its behavior reflect how its only
user expects it to behave, and BUG() out on the rest.

By doing this we can also stop needlessly xstrdup()-ing and free()-ing
the memory for the config we're setting. We can instead always use
constant strings. We can also use the *_tmp() variant of
git_config_get_string().

Let's also rename this submodule_strategy_to_string() function to
submodule_update_type_to_string(). Now that it's only tasked with
returning a string version of the "enum submodule_update_type type".
Before it would look at the "command" field in "struct
submodule_update_strategy".

As reported in [1] the "UNUSED(var)" macro introduced in
2174b8c75de (Merge branch 'jk/unused-annotation' into next,
2022-08-24) breaks coccinelle's parsing of our sources in files where
it occurs.

Let's instead partially go with the approach suggested in [2] of
making this not take an argument. As noted in [1] "coccinelle" will
ignore such tokens in argument lists that it doesn't know about, and
it's less of a surprise to syntax highlighters.

This undoes the "help us notice when a parameter marked as unused is
actually use" part of 9b24034754 (git-compat-util: add UNUSED macro,

This commit is almost entirely made with a coccinelle rule[1]. The
only manual change here is in run-command.h to rename the struct
member itself and to change "env_array" to "env" in the

The rest of this is all a result of applying [1]:

Jonathan Tan 2a69ff09d5 shallow: reset commit grafts when shallow is reset
When reset_repository_shallow() is called, Git clears its cache of
shallow information, so that if shallow information is re-requested, Git
will read fresh data from disk instead of reusing its stale cached data.
However, the cache of commit grafts is not likewise cleared, even though
there are commit grafts created from shallow information.

This means that if on-disk shallow information were to be updated and
then a commit-graft-using codepath were run (for example, a revision
walk), Git would be using stale commit graft information. This can be
seen from the test in this patch, in which Git performs a revision walk
(to check for changed submodules) after a fetch with --update-shallow.

Therefore, clear the cache of commit grafts whenever
reset_repository_shallow() is called.

Glen Choo 5fff35d880 submodule: fix latent check_has_commit() bug
When check_has_commit() is called on a missing submodule, initialization
of the struct repository fails, but it attempts to clear the struct
anyway (which is a fatal error). This bug is masked by its only caller,
submodule_has_commits(), first calling add_submodule_odb(). The latter
fails if the submodule does not exist, making submodule_has_commits()
exit early and not invoke check_has_commit().

Fix this bug, and because calling add_submodule_odb() is no longer
necessary as of 13a2f620b2 (submodule: pass repo to
check_has_commit(), 2021-10-08), remove that call too.

This is the last caller of add_submodule_odb(), so remove that

Glen Choo b90d9f7632 fetch: fetch unpopulated, changed submodules
"git fetch --recurse-submodules" only considers populated
submodules (i.e. submodules that can be found by iterating the index),
which makes "git fetch" behave differently based on which commit is
checked out. As a result, even if the user has initialized all submodules
correctly, they may not fetch the necessary submodule commits, and
commands like "git checkout --recurse-submodules" might fail.

Teach "git fetch" to fetch cloned, changed submodules regardless of
whether they are populated. This is in addition to the current behavior
of fetching populated submodules (which is always attempted regardless
of what was fetched in the superproject, or even if nothing was fetched
in the superproject).

A submodule may be encountered multiple times (via the list of
populated submodules or via the list of changed submodules). When this
happens, "git fetch" only reads the 'populated copy' and ignores the
'changed copy'. Amend the verify_fetch_result() test helper so that we
can assert on which 'copy' is being read.

Glen Choo 5370b91f3f submodule: move logic into fetch_task_create()
get_fetch_task() gets a fetch task by iterating the index; a future
commit will introduce a similar function, get_fetch_task_from_changed(),
that gets a fetch task from the list of changed submodules. Both
functions are similar in that they need to:

* create a fetch task
* initialize the submodule repo for the fetch task
* determine the default recursion mode

Move all of this logic into fetch_task_create() so that it is no longer
split between fetch_task_create() and get_fetch_task(). This will make

Glen Choo 961b130d20 branch: add --recurse-submodules option for branch creation
To improve the submodules UX, we would like to teach Git to handle
branches in submodules. Start this process by teaching "git branch" the
--recurse-submodules option so that "git branch --recurse-submodules
topic" will create the `topic` branch in the superproject and its
submodules.

Although this commit does not introduce breaking changes, it does not
work well with existing --recurse-submodules commands because "git
branch --recurse-submodules" writes to the submodule ref store, but most
commands only consider the superproject gitlink and ignore the submodule
ref store. For example, "git checkout --recurse-submodules" will check
out the commits in the superproject gitlinks (and put the submodules in
detached HEAD) instead of checking out the submodule branches.

Because of this, this commit introduces a new configuration value,
`submodule.propagateBranches`. The plan is for Git commands to
prioritize submodule ref store information over superproject gitlinks if
this value is true. Because "git branch --recurse-submodules" writes to
submodule ref stores, for the sake of clarity, it will not function
unless this configuration value is set.

This commit also includes changes that support working with submodules
from a superproject commit because "branch --recurse-submodules" (and
future commands) need to read .gitmodules and gitlinks from the
superproject commit, but submodules are typically read from the
filesystem's .gitmodules and the index's gitlinks. These changes are:

* add a submodules_of_tree() helper that gives the relevant
information of an in-tree submodule (e.g. path and oid) and
  initializes the repository
* add is_tree_submodule_active() by adding a treeish_name parameter to
  is_submodule_active()
* add the "submoduleNotUpdated" advice to advise users to update the
  submodules in their trees

Incidentally, fix an incorrect usage string that combined the 'list'
usage of git branch (-l) with the 'create' usage; this string has been
incorrect since its inception, a8dfd5eac4 (Make builtin-branch.c use
parse_options., 2007-10-07).

Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason f69a6e4f07 *.h: move some *_INIT to designated initializers
Move various *_INIT macros to use designated initializers. This helps
readability. I've only picked those leftover macros that were not
touched by another in-flight series of mine which changed others, but
also how initialization was done.

In the case of SUBMODULE_ALTERNATE_SETUP_INIT I've left an explicit
initialization of "error_mode", even though
SUBMODULE_ALTERNATE_ERROR_IGNORE itself is defined as "0". Let's not
peek under the hood and assume that enum fields we know the value of
will stay at "0".

The change to "TESTSUITE_INIT" in "t/helper/test-run-command.c" was
part of an earlier on-list version[1] of c90be786da (test-tool
run-command: fix flip-flop init pattern, 2021-09-11).

Elijah Newren 94b7f1563a Comment important codepaths regarding nuking untracked files/dirs
In the last few commits we focused on code in unpack-trees.c that
mistakenly removed untracked files or directories. There may be more of
those, but in this commit we change our focus: callers of toplevel
commands that are expected to remove untracked files or directories.

As noted previously, we have toplevel commands that are expected to
delete untracked files such as 'read-tree --reset', 'reset --hard', and
'checkout --force'. However, that does not mean that other highlevel
commands that happen to call these other commands thought about or
conveyed to users the possibility that untracked files could be removed.
Audit the code for such callsites, and add comments near existing
callsites to mention whether these are safe or not.

My auditing is somewhat incomplete, though; it skipped several cases:
  * git-rebase--preserve-merges.sh: is in the process of being
deprecated/removed, so I won't leave a note that there are
likely more bugs in that script.
  * contrib/git-new-workdir: why is the -f flag being used in a new
empty directory?? It shouldn't hurt, but it seems useless.
  * git-p4.py: Don't see why -f is needed for a new dir (maybe it's
not and is just superfluous), but I'm not at all familiar with
    the p4 stuff
  * git-archimport.perl: Don't care; arch is long since dead
  * git-cvs*.perl: Don't care; cvs is long since dead

Also, the reset --hard in builtin/worktree.c looks safe, due to only
running in an empty directory.

Jonathan Tan ce125d431a submodule: extract path to submodule gitdir func
We currently store each submodule gitdir in ".git/modules/<name>", but
this has problems with some submodule naming schemes, as described in a
comment in submodule_name_to_gitdir() in this patch.

Extract the determination of the location of a submodule's gitdir into
its own function submodule_name_to_gitdir(). For now, the problem
remains unsolved, but this puts us in a better position for finding a
solution.

This was motivated, at $DAYJOB, by a part of Android's repo hierarchy
[1]. In particular, there is a repo "build", and several repos of the
form "build/<name>".

This is based on earlier work by Brandon Williams [2].

Jonathan Tan 5df5106e1e submodule: remove unnecessary unabsorbed fallback
In get_submodule_repo_for(), there is a fallback code path for the case
in which a submodule has an unabsorbed gitdir. (See the documentation
for "git submodule absorbgitdirs" for more information about absorbed
and unabsorbed gitdirs.) However, this code path is unnecessary, because
such submodules are already handled: when the fetch_task is created in
fetch_task_create(), it will create its own struct submodule with a path
and name, and repo_submodule_init() can handle such a struct.

This fallback was introduced in 26f80ccfc1 ("submodule: migrate
get_next_submodule to use repository structs", 2018-12-05). It was
unnecessary even then, but perhaps it escaped notice because its parent
commit d5498e0871 ("repository: repo_submodule_init to take a submodule
struct", 2018-12-05) was the one that taught repo_submodule_init() to
handle such created structs. Before, it took a path and always checked
.gitmodules, so it truly would have failed if there were no entry in
.gitmodules.

(Note to reviewers: in 26f80ccfc1, the "own struct submodule" I
mentioned is in get_next_submodule(), not fetch_task_create().)

Jonathan Tan 8d33c3af0b grep: use submodule-ODB-as-alternate lazy-addition
In the parent commit, Git was taught to add submodule ODBs as alternates
lazily, but grep does not use this because it computes the path to add
directly, not going through add_submodule_odb(). Add an equivalent to
add_submodule_odb() that takes the exact ODB path and teach grep to use
it.

Jonathan Tan a35e03dee0 submodule: lazily add submodule ODBs as alternates
Teach Git to add submodule ODBs as alternates to the object store of
the_repository only upon the first access of an object not in
the_repository, and not when add_submodule_odb() is called.

This provides a means of gradually migrating from accessing a
submodule's object through alternates to accessing a submodule's object
by explicitly passing its repository object. Any Git command can declare
that it might access submodule objects by calling add_submodule_odb()
(as they do now), but the submodule ODBs themselves will not be added
until needed, so individual commands and/or combinations of arguments
can be migrated one by one.

[The advantage of explicit repository-object passing is code clarity (it
is clear which repository an object read is from), performance (there is
no need to linearly search through all submodule ODBs whenever an object
is accessed from any repository, whether superproject or submodule), and
the possibility of future features like partial clone submodules (which
right now is not possible because if an object is missing, we do not
know which repository to lazy-fetch into).]

This commit also introduces an environment variable that a test may set
to make the actual registration of alternates fatal, in order to
demonstrate that its codepaths do not need this registration.
