Jeff King 9b204b825b hash: use git_hash_init() consistently
We'd like to add more logic to git_hash_init(), but many callers skip it
and call algop->init_fn() directly. Let's make sure we're consistently
using the wrapper by adding a coccinelle rule.

Besides the coccinelle file itself, this is a purely mechanical
conversion based on the patch it generates. There should be no bare
init_fn() calls left (except for the one in the wrapper).

Patrick Steinhardt 2242f7ee36 treewide: convert users of `whence` to the new source field
The `whence` field has become redundant now that callers can learn about
the exact source an object has been looked up from via the `struct
object_info_source::source` field.

Adapt callers to use the new field. Note that all callsites already set
up the `info.sourcep` request pointer, so the conversion is rather
straight-forward.

Patrick Steinhardt 32a95be604 odb: add `source` field to struct object_info_source
The previous commit introduced `struct object_info_source` as an opt-in
container for backend-specific information, but for now we only moved
preexisting data into this structure. Most importantly, the caller has
no way yet to learn about which source an object was actually looked up
from. Instead, callers have to rely on the `whence` enum to distinguish
the object type, but cannot use that enum to tell the object source.

Add a `struct odb_source *source` field to the structure and populate it
from each backend's lookup path.

The `whence` enum is still set and used by callers; it will be removed
in a subsequent commit now that `sourcep->source` can identify the
backend on its own.

Patrick Steinhardt 126076b62f odb: make backend-specific fields optional
The `struct object_info` carries two pieces of information
about how an object was looked up:

  - The `whence` enum identifying the backend.

  - The backend-tagged union `u` exposing backend-specific details
    (currently only the packed-source case, which records the owning
    pack, offset and packed object type).

The union is populated unconditionally, even though most callers don't
care about provenance at all.

Split the backend-specific union out into a new public type, `struct
object_info_source`, and make the object info structure carry it via
just another opt-in request pointer. As with all the other requestable
information, callers that need source info allocate a `struct
object_info_source` on the stack and point `sourcep` at it; callers that
don't care about it simply leave the field as a `NULL` pointer. Adapt
callers accordingly.

Note that the `whence` enum is strictly-speaking also backend-specific
information, so it would be another good candidate to be moved into the
`struct object_info_source`. For now though it is left alone, as it will
be replaced by a `struct odb_source` pointer in a subsequent commit.

Johannes Schindelin c6a4629e32 odb: use size_t for object_info.sizep and the size APIs
When `js/objects-larger-than-4gb-on-windows` widened the streaming,
index-pack and unpack-objects code paths, in the interest of keeping the
patches somewhat reasonably-sized, it left the public ODB API still
typed in `unsigned long`. In particular `struct object_info::sizep` and
the four wrappers built on top of it (`odb_read_object`,
`odb_read_object_peeled`, `odb_read_object_info`, `odb_pretend_object`)
still return the unpacked size through `unsigned long *`, so on Windows
`cat-file -s` and the `git add` / `git status` paths for a >4 GiB blob
silently cap at 4 GiB.

Widen the field and the four wrappers. The previous commits already
widened the `unpack_entry()` cascade and pack-objects' in-core size
accessors, so most of the cascade arrives here with no further work: the
temporary shims in `packed_object_info_with_index_pos()` and in
`unpack_entry()`'s delta-base recovery path go away, the two
`SET_SIZE(entry, cast_size_t_to_ulong(canonical_size))` calls in
`check_object()` and the matching one in `drop_reused_delta()` collapse
to plain `SET_SIZE`, and `oe_get_size_slow()`'s tail
`cast_size_t_to_ulong()` is gone too.

What remains narrow are the boundaries this series does not
intend to touch: the diff, blame, textconv and fast-import machinery.

Even so, this patch is unfortunately quite large.

Johannes Schindelin 33afe87338 patch-delta: use size_t for sizes
`patch_delta()` takes the source and delta sizes by value and writes
back the reconstructed target size through an `unsigned long *`.  That
datatype cannot represent a value that exceeds 4 GiB on systems where
`unsigned long` is 32-bit (notably 64-bit Windows builds), though, even
though the delta encoding itself, the on-disk layout, and the in-memory
buffers happily carry such sizes. A `size_t` companion to
`get_delta_hdr_size()`, `get_delta_hdr_size_sz()`, was introduced in
17fa077596 (delta, packfile: use size_t for delta header sizes,
2026-05-08) precisely so that `patch_delta()` could be widened without
changing the on-the-wire decoding helper's signature.

Widen `patch_delta()`'s three size parameters to `size_t` and switch
its internal use of `get_delta_hdr_size()` to the `_sz` variant.
Then propagate the wider type through the callers.

Olamide Caleb Bello e0f86540ab environment: move `zlib_compression_level` into `struct repo_config_values`
The `zlib_compression_level` configuration is currently stored in the
global variable `zlib_compression_level`, which makes it shared across
repository instances within a single process.

Store it instead in `repo_config_values`, where eagerly‑parsed
repository configuration lives. `zlib_compression_level` is parsed
eagerly because it determines compression behaviour for objects and
packs – core operations where a lazy parse could lead to unpredictable
results and hinder libification. This preserves the existing
eager‑parsing behavior while tying the value to the repository it
was read from, avoiding cross‑repository state leakage and continuing
the effort to reduce reliance on global configuration state.

Update all references to use `repo_config_values()`.

Arijit Banerjee 6e670b3f0c index-pack: retain child bases in delta cache
When resolving a delta whose result has children of its own,
index-pack adds the result to work_head, accounts its data in
base_cache_used, and calls prune_base_data(). It then immediately frees
that same data.

This bypasses the existing delta base cache policy and can force later
descendants to reconstruct the queued base again. Let the existing
delta_base_cache_limit pruning policy decide whether to keep or evict
the data instead.

This does not add a new cache or increase the cache limit. The object
data is already accounted in base_cache_used before prune_base_data()
runs, and the existing pruning and base cleanup paths still release it.

On a quiet Ubuntu 24.04 VM with 16 vCPUs, 32 GiB RAM, and local SSD,
direct index-pack timings on single-pack Linux fixtures improved as
follows:

  linux blobless: 69.17s -> 57.98s (16.2% faster), RSS flat
  linux full:     280.72s -> 236.32s (15.8% faster), RSS +1.9%

Five-repeat medians on public repositories also improved:

  git.git:  12.31s -> 10.70s (13.1% faster)
  libgit2:   3.35s ->  2.88s (14.0% faster)
  redis:     6.52s ->  5.64s (13.5% faster)
  cpython:  33.02s -> 31.44s (4.8% faster)

The standard p5302 perf test on a smaller git.git fixture was neutral:

  5302.9 index-pack default threads:
    11.21(38.07+1.33) -> 11.16(37.90+1.31), -0.4%

t/t5302-pack-index.sh passed, and GitGitGadget's linux-leaks CI also
exercised that test under SANITIZE=leak.

Johannes Schindelin f2063855fb index-pack, unpack-objects: use size_t for object size
When unpacking objects from a packfile, the object size is decoded
from a variable-length encoding. On platforms where unsigned long is
32-bit (such as Windows, even in 64-bit builds), the shift operation
overflows when decoding sizes larger than 4GB. The result is a
truncated size value, causing the unpacked object to be corrupted or
rejected.

Fix this by changing the size variable to size_t, which is 64-bit on
64-bit platforms, and ensuring the shift arithmetic occurs in 64-bit
space.

Declare the per-byte continuation variable `c` as size_t as well,
matching the canonical varint decoder unpack_object_header_buffer()
in packfile.c. With c as size_t the expression (c & 0x7f) << shift
is naturally size_t-typed, so the explicit cast that an earlier
iteration carried at the use site is no longer needed.

While at it, add the same overflow guard that
unpack_object_header_buffer() carries: if the cumulative shift would
exceed bitsizeof(size_t) - 7, refuse the input rather than invoking
undefined behavior. Unlike unpack_object_header_buffer(), which
labels this case "bad object header", report it as the platform
limit it actually is: a header may be perfectly well-formed and
still encode a size we cannot represent locally (notably on a
32-bit build consuming a packfile produced on a 64-bit host).

Scott Bauersfeld 007062ab4e index-pack, unpack-objects: increase input buffer from 4 KiB to 128 KiB
index-pack and unpack-objects both read pack data from stdin through
a 4 KiB static buffer. In index-pack, each fill() flushes consumed
bytes to the pack file via write_or_die(), capping every write(2)
at 4 KiB. unpack-objects uses the same buffer pattern for reads.

On FUSE-backed filesystems every write(2) is a synchronous round
trip through the FUSE protocol (userspace -> kernel -> userspace ->
back), so the 4 KiB buffer turns a clone into many unnecessary tiny
writes with noticeable latency overhead.

Increase the buffer from 4 KiB to 128 KiB. Introduce a shared
DEFAULT_IO_BUFFER_SIZE constant in git-compat-util.h (next to
MAX_IO_SIZE) and use it in index-pack, unpack-objects, and the
hashfile layer in csum-file (which already used 128 KiB but
hardcoded the value).

Pack file writes to a FUSE filesystem with writeback caching
disabled during HTTPS clones of git/git (~293 MB pack):

  74,958 -> 4,687 (94% fewer)

Wall-clock time of git clone over HTTPS onto a FUSE passthrough
filesystem with writeback caching disabled, 3 runs per variant:

  vscode (~1.26 GB pack): 84.5s -> 75.7s avg (10% faster)
  git/git (~306 MB pack):  22.6s -> 20.0s avg (11% faster)

could of course explicitly pass a repository down the callchain, we

functions.

Patrick Steinhardt f223609026 fsck: initialize fsck options via a function
We initialize the `struct fsck_options` via a set of macros, often in
global scope. In the next commit though we're about to introduce a new
repository field to the options that must be initialized, and naturally
we don't have a repo other than `the_repository` available in this
scope.

Refactor the code to instead intrdouce a new `fsck_options_init()`
function that initializes the options for us and move initialization
into function scope.

Patrick Steinhardt d9ecf268ef odb: embed base source in the "files" backend
The "files" backend is implemented as a pointer in the `struct
odb_source`. This contradicts our typical pattern for pluggable backends
like we use it for example in the ref store or for object database
streams, where we typically embed the generic base structure in the
specialized implementation. This pattern has a couple of small benefits:

  - We avoid an extra allocation.

  - We hide implementation details in the generic structure.

  - We can easily downcast from a generic backend to the specialized
    structure and vice versa because the offsets are known at compile
    time.

  - It becomes trivial to identify locations where we depend on backend
    specific logic because the cast needs to be explicit.

Refactor our "files" object database source to do the same and embed the
`struct odb_source` in the `struct odb_source_files`.

There are still a bunch of sites in our code base where we do have to
access internals of the "files" backend. The intent is that those will
go away over time, but this will certainly take a while. Meanwhile,
provide a `odb_source_files_downcast()` function that can convert a
generic source into a "files" source.

As we only have a single source the downcast succeeds unconditionally
for now. Eventually though the intent is to make the cast `BUG()` in
case the caller requests to downcast a non-"files" backend to a "files"
backend.

Patrick Steinhardt cb506a8a69 odb: introduce "files" source
Introduce a new "files" object database source. This source encapsulates
access to both loose object files and the packfile store, similar to how
the "files" backend for refs encapsulates access to loose refs and the
packed-refs file.

Note that for now the "files" source is still a direct member of a
`struct odb_source`. This architecture will be reversed in the next
commit so that the files source contains a `struct odb_source`.

Patrick Steinhardt 84f0e60b28 packfile: move packfile store into object source
The packfile store is a member of `struct object_database`, which means
that we have a single store per database. This doesn't really make much
sense though: each source connected to the database has its own set of
packfiles, so there is a conceptual mismatch here. This hasn't really
caused much of a problem in the past, but with the advent of pluggable
object databases this is becoming more of a problem because some of the
sources may not even use packfiles in the first place.

Move the packfile store down by one level from the object database into
the object database source. This ensures that each source now has its
own packfile store, and we can eventually start to abstract it away
entirely so that the caller doesn't even know what kind of store it
uses.

Note that we only need to adjust a relatively small number of callers,
way less than one might expect. This is because most callers are using
`repo_for_each_pack()`, which handles enumeration of all packfiles that
exist in the repository. So for now, none of these callers need to be
adapted. The remaining callers that iterate through the packfiles
directly and that need adjustment are those that are a bit more tangled
with packfiles. These will be adjusted over time.

Note that this patch only moves the packfile store, and there is still a
bunch of functions that seemingly operate on a packfile store but that
end up iterating over all sources. These will be adjusted in subsequent
commits.

Patrick Steinhardt 8dc22e87f0 builtin/index-pack: fix deferred fsck outside repos
When asked to perform object consistency checks via the `--fsck-objects`
flag we verify that each object part of the pack is valid. In general,
this check can even be performed outside of a Git repository: we don't
need an initialized object database as we simply read the object from
the packfile directly.

But there's one exception: a subset of the object checks may be deferred
to a later point in time. For now, this only concerns ".gitmodules" and
".gitattributes" files: whenever we see a tree referencing these files
we queue them for a deferred check. This is done because we need to do
some extra checks for those files to ensure that they are well-formed,
and these checks need to be done regardless of whether the corresponding
blobs are part of the packfile or not.

This works inside a repository, but unfortunately the logic leads to a
segfault when running outside of one. This is because we eventually call
`odb_read_object()`, which will crash because the object database has
not been initialized.

There's multiple options here:

  - We could in theory create a purely in-memory database with only a
    packfile store that contains the single packfile. We don't really
    have the infrastructure for this yet though, and it would end up
    being quite hacky.

  - We could refuse to perform consistency checks outside of a
    repository. But most of the checks work alright, so this would be a
    regression.

  - We can skip the finalizing consistency checks when running outside
    of a repository. This is not as invasive as skipping all checks,
    but it's not great to randomly skip a subset of tests, either.

None of these options really feel perfect. The first one would be the
obvious choice if easily possible.

There's another option though: instead of skipping the final object
checks, we can die if there are any queued object checks. With this
change we now die exactly if and only if we would have previously
segfaulted. Like this we ensure that objects that _may_ fail the
consistency checks won't be silently skipped, and at the same time we
give users a much better error message.

Refactor the code accordingly and add a test that would have triggered
the segfault. Note that we also move down the logic to add the packfile
to the store. There is no point doing this any earlier than right before
we execute `fsck_finish()`, and it ensures that the logic to set up and
perform the consistency check is self-contained.

Patrick Steinhardt 7b94028652 streaming: drop redundant type and size pointers
In the preceding commits we have turned `struct odb_read_stream` into a
publicly visible structure. Furthermore, this structure now contains the
type and size of the object that we are about to stream. Consequently,
the out-pointers that we used before to propagate the type and size of
the streamed object are now somewhat redundant with the data contained
in the structure itself.

Drop these out-pointers and adapt callers accordingly.

Patrick Steinhardt 6bdda3a3b0 streaming: rename `git_istream` into `odb_read_stream`
In the following patches we are about to make the `git_istream` more
generic so that it becomes fully controlled by the specific object
source that wants to create it. As part of these refactorings we'll
fully move the structure into the object database subsystem.

Prepare for this change by renaming the structure from `git_istream`
to `odb_read_stream`. This mirrors the `odb_write_stream` structure that
we already have.

Patrick Steinhardt d67530f6bb packfile: introduce function to load and add packfiles
We have a recurring pattern where we essentially perform an upsert of a
packfile in case it isn't yet known by the packfile store. The logic to
do so is non-trivial as we have to reconstruct the packfile's key, check
the map of packfiles, then create the new packfile and finally add it to
the store.

Introduce a new function that does this dance for us. Refactor callsites
to use it.

Patrick Steinhardt 9ce196e86b config: drop `git_config()` wrapper
In 036876a106 (config: hide functions using `the_repository` by
default, 2024-08-13) we have moved around a bunch of functions in the
config subsystem that depend on `the_repository`. Those function have
been converted into mere wrappers around their equivalent function that
takes in a repository as parameter, and the intent was that we'll
eventually remove those wrappers to make the dependency on the global
repository variable explicit at the callsite.

Follow through with that intent and remove `git_config()`. All callsites
are adjusted so that they use `repo_config(the_repository, ...)`
instead. While some callsites might already have a repository available,
this mechanical conversion is the exact same as the current situation
and thus cannot cause any regression. Those sites should eventually be
cleaned up in a later patch series.

Patrick Steinhardt cbb388f3e5 object-file: get rid of `the_repository` in `finalize_object_file()`
We implicitly depend on `the_repository` when moving an object file into
place in `finalize_object_file()`. Get rid of this global dependency by
passing in a repository.

Note that one might be pressed to inject an object database instead of a
repository. But the function doesn't really care about the ODB at all.
All it does is to move a file into place while checking whether there is
any collision. As such, the functionality it provides is independent of
the object database and only needs the repository as parameter so that
it can adjust permissions of the file we are about to finalize.

brian m. carlson dc9c16c2fc builtin: use default hash when outside a repository
We have some commands that can operate inside or outside a repository.
If we're operating outside a repository, we clearly cannot use the
repository's hash algorithm as a default since it doesn't exist, so
instead, let's pick the default instead of specifically SHA-1.  Right
now this results in no functional change since the default is SHA-1, but
that may change in the future.

Patrick Steinhardt 062b914c84 treewide: convert users of `repo_has_object_file()` to `has_object()`
As the comment of `repo_has_object_file()` and its `_with_flags()`
variant tells us, these functions are considered to be deprecated in
favor of `has_object()`. There are a couple of slight benefits in favor
of the replacement:

  - The new function has a short-and-sweet name.

  - More explicit defaults: `has_object()` doesn't fetch missing objects
    via promisor remotes, and neither does it reload packfiles if an
    object wasn't found by default. This ensures that it becomes
    immediately obvious when a simple object existence check may result
    in expensive actions.

Most importantly though, it is confusing that we have two sets of
functions that ultimately do the same thing, but with different
defaults.

Start sunsetting `repo_has_object_file()` and its `_with_flags()`
sibling by replacing all callsites with `has_object()`:

  - `repo_has_object_file(...)` is equivalent to
    `has_object(..., HAS_OBJECT_RECHECK_PACKED | HAS_OBJECT_FETCH_PROMISOR)`.

  - `repo_has_object_file_with_flags(..., OBJECT_INFO_QUICK | OBJECT_INFO_SKIP_FETCH_OBJECT)`
    is equivalent to `has_object(..., 0)`.

  - `repo_has_object_file_with_flags(..., OBJECT_INFO_SKIP_FETCH_OBJECT)`
    is equivalent to `has_object(..., HAS_OBJECT_RECHECK_PACKED)`.

  - `repo_has_object_file_with_flags(..., OBJECT_INFO_QUICK)`
    is equivalent to `has_object(..., HAS_OBJECT_FETCH_PROMISOR)`.

The replacements should be functionally equivalent.

Patrick Steinhardt 0b8ed25b66 object-store: move and rename `odb_pack_keep()`
The function `odb_pack_keep()` creates a file at the passed-in path. If
this fails, then the function re-tries by first creating any potentially
missing leading directories and then trying to create the file once
again. As such, this function doesn't host any kind of logic that is
specific to the object store, but is rather a generic helper function.

Rename the function to `safe_create_file_with_leading_directories()` and
move it into "path.c". While at it, refactor it so that it loses its
dependency on `the_repository`.

Derrick Stolee 98f8854c94 index-pack: allow revisiting REF_DELTA chains
As detailed in the previous changes to t5309-pack-delta-cycles.sh, the
logic within 'git index-pack' to analyze an incoming thin packfile with
REF_DELTAs is suspect. The algorithm is overly cautious around delta
cycles, and that leads in fact to failing even when there is no cycle.

This change adjusts the algorithm to no longer fail in these cases. In
fact, these cycle cases will no longer fail but more importantly the
valid cases will no longer fail, either. The resulting packfile from the
--fix-thin operation will not have cycles either since REF_DELTAs are
forbidden from the on-disk format and OFS_DELTAs are impossible to write
as a cycle.

The crux of the matter is how the algorithm works when the REF_DELTAs
point to base objects that exist in the local repository. When reading
the thin packfile, the object IDs for the delta objects are unknown so
we do not have the delta chain structure automatically. Instead, we need
to start somewhere by selecting a delta whose base is inside our current
object database.

Consider the case where the packfile has two REF_DELTA objects, A and B,
and the delta chain looks like "A depends on B" and "B depends on C" for
some third object C, where C is already in the current repository. The
algorithm _should_ start with all objects that depend on C, finding B,
and then moving on to all objects depending on B, finding A.

However, if the repository also already has object B, then the delta
chain can be analyzed in a different order. The deltas with base B can
be analyzed first, finding A, and then the deltas with base C are
analyzed, finding B. The algorithm currently continues to look for
objects that depend on B, finding A again. This fails due to A's
'real_type' member already being overwritten from OBJ_REF_DELTA to the
correct object type.

This scenario is possible in a typical 'git fetch' where the client does
not advertise B as a 'have' but requests A as a 'want' (and C is noticed
as a common object based on other 'have's). The reason this isn't
typically seen is that most Git servers use OFS_DELTAs to represent
deltas within a packfile. However, if a server uses only REF_DELTAs,
then this kind of issue can occur. There is nothing in the explicit
packfile format that states this use of inter-pack REF_DELTA is
incorrect, only that REF_DELTAs should not be used in the on-disk
representation to avoid cycles.

This die() was introduced in ab791dd138 (index-pack: fix race condition
with duplicate bases, 2014-08-29). Several refactors have adjusted the
error message and the surrounding logic, but this issue has existed for
a longer time as that was only a conversion from an assert().

The tests in t5309 originated in 3b910d0c5e (add tests for indexing
packs with delta cycles, 2013-08-23) and b2ef3d9ebb (test index-pack on
packs with recoverable delta cycles, 2013-08-23). These changes make
note that the current behavior of handling "resolvable" cycles is mostly
a documentation-only test, not that this behavior is the best way for
Git to handle the situation.

The fix here is somewhat complicated due to the amount of state being
adjusted by the loop within threaded_second_pass(). Instead of trying to
resume the start of the loop while adjusting the necessary context, I
chose to scan the REF_DELTAs depending on the current 'parent' and skip
any that have already been processed. This necessarily leaves us in a
state where 'child' and 'child_obj' could be left as NULL and that must
be handled later. There is also some careful handling around skipping
REF_DELTAs when there are also OFS_DELTAs depending on that parent.
There may be value in extending 'test-tool pack-deltas' to allow writing
OFS_DELTAs in order to exercise this logic across the delta types.

Patrick Steinhardt 68cd492a3e object-store: merge "object-store-ll.h" and "object-store.h"
The "object-store-ll.h" header has been introduced to keep transitive
header dependendcies and compile times at bay. Now that we have created
a new "object-store.c" file though we can easily move the last remaining
additional bit of "object-store.h", the `odb_path_map`, out of the
header.

Do so. As the "object-store.h" header is now equivalent to its low-level
alternative we drop the latter and inline it into the former.

Patrick Steinhardt 7835ee75cd environment: move access to "core.bigFileThreshold" into repo settings
The "core.bigFileThreshold" setting is stored in a global variable and
populated via `git_default_core_config()`. This may cause issues in
the case where one is handling multiple different repositories in a
single process with different values for that config key, as we may or
may not see the correct value in that case. Furthermore, global state
blocks our path towards libification.

Refactor the code so that we instead store the value in `struct
repo_settings`, where the value is computed as-needed and cached.

Note that this change requires us to adapt one test in t1050 that
verifies that we die when parsing an invalid "core.bigFileThreshold"
value. The exercised Git command doesn't use the value at all, and thus
it won't hit the new code path that parses the value. This is addressed
by using git-hash-object(1) instead, which does read the value.
