Michael J Gruber	4a689afb03	difftool: provide basename to external tools Currently, only configured diff helpers get the basename of the file being compared. Tools specified with "git difftool -x" only get the names of temporary files for the different versions. Export BASE so that an external tool can read the name from the environment. Rather than using a third argument, this avoids breaking existing scripts which may somewhat carelessly be using "$@" rather than "$1" "$2". David Aguilar	1c6f5b52b7	difftool: Allow specifying unconfigured commands with --extcmd git-difftool requires difftool.<tool>.cmd configuration even when tools use the standard "$diffcmd $from $to" form. This teaches git-difftool to run these tools in lieu of configuration by allowing the command to be specified on the command line. David Aguilar	61ed71dcff	difftool--helper: Remove use of the GIT_MERGE_TOOL variable An undocumented mis-feature in git-difftool is that it allows you to specify a default difftool by setting GIT_MERGE_TOOL. This behavior was never documented and was included as an oversight back when git-difftool was maintained outside of git. git-mergetool never honored GIT_MERGE_TOOL so neither should git-difftool. David Aguilar	47d65924a6	mergetool--lib: simplify API usage by removing more global variables The mergetool--lib scriplet was tricky to use because it relied upon the existance of several global shell variables. This removes more global variables so that things are simpler for callers. A side effect is that some variables are recomputed each time run_merge_tool() is called, but the overhead for recomputing them is justified by the simpler implementation. Markus Heidelberg	bad4273200	git-mergetool/difftool: make (g)vimdiff workable under Windows Under Windows vimdiff and gvimdiff are not available as symbolic links, but as batch files vimdiff.bat and gvimdiff.bat. These files weren't found by 'type vimdiff' which led to the following error: The merge tool vimdiff is not available as 'vimdiff' Even if they were found, it wouldn't work to invoke these batch files from git-mergetool. To solve this, use vim and gvim (vim.exe and gvim.exe) and pass the -d command line switch over to them. David Aguilar	2464456a6a	contrib/difftool: use a separate config namespace for difftool commands Some users have different mergetool and difftool settings, so teach difftool to read config vars from the difftool.* namespace. This allows having distinct configurations for the diff and merge scenarios. We don't want to force existing users to set new values for no reason so difftool falls back to existing mergetool config variables when the difftool equivalents are not defined. David Aguilar	99ccabaffa	contrib/difftool: Don't repeat merge tool candidates git difftool listed some candidates for mergetools twice, depending on the environment. This slightly changes the behavior when both KDE_FULL_SESSION and GNOME_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID are set at the same time; in such a case meld is used in favor of kdiff3 (the old code favored kdiff3 in such a case), but it should not matter in practice. Markus Heidelberg	f13bfc1be7	contrib/difftool: change trap condition from SIGINT to INT git-difftool worked for me on an up-to-date Gentoo Linux at home, but didn't work on a somewhat older Ubuntu Linux 7.10 at work and failed with the following error, where 'Makefile' was locally modified: trap: 244: SIGINT: bad trap external diff died, stopping at Makefile. In 'man 1p trap' there is written: "The condition can be EXIT, 0 (equivalent to EXIT), or a signal specified using a symbolic name, without the SIG prefix, [...]" "Implementations may permit names with the SIG prefix or ignore case in signal names as an extension." David Aguilar	5c38ea31f3	contrib: add 'git difftool' for launching common merge tools 'git difftool' is a git command that allows you to compare and edit files between revisions using common merge tools. 'git difftool' does what 'git mergetool' does but its use is for non-merge situations such as when preparing commits or comparing changes against the index. It uses the same configuration variables as 'git mergetool' and provides the same command-line interface as 'git diff'.
