I recently had reported to me a crash from a coworker using the recently
added sendemail mailmap support:
3724814 Segmentation fault (core dumped) git check-mailmap "bugs@company.xx"
This appears to happen because of the NULL pointer name passed into
map_user(). Fix this by passing "" instead of NULL so that we have a
valid pointer.

The convention to calling into built-in command implementation has
been updated to pass the repository, if known, together with the
prefix value.

include builtin.h (by definition, that means all builtins/*.c).
Also, remove the include statement for repository.h since it gets
brought in through builtin.h.
The next step will be to migrate each builtin
from having to use the_repository.

In order to reduce the usage of the global the_repository, add a
parameter to builtin functions that will get passed a repository
variable.
This commit uses UNUSED on most of the builtin functions, as subsequent
commits will modify the actual builtins to pass the repository parameter
down.

The git check-mailmap command reads the mailmap from either the default
.mailmap location and then from the mailmap.blob and mailmap.file
configurations.
A following change to git send-email will want to support new
configuration options based on the configured identity. The
identity-based configuration and options only make sense in the context
of git send-email.
Expose the read_mailmap_file and read_mailmap_blob functions from
mailmap.c. Teach git check-mailmap the --mailmap-file and
--mailmap-blob options which load the additional mailmap sources.

git check-mailmap splits each provided contact using split_ident_line.
This function requires that the contact either be of the form "Name
<user@host>" or of the form "<user@host>". In particular, if the mail
portion of the contact is not surrounded by angle brackets,
split_ident_line will reject it.
This results in git check-mailmap rejecting attempts to translate simple
email addresses:
$ git check-mailmap user@host
fatal: unable to parse contact: user@host
This limits the usability of check-mailmap as it requires placing angle
brackets around plain email addresses.
In particular, attempting to use git check-mailmap to support mapping
addresses in git send-email is not straight forward. The sanitization
and validation functions in git send-email strip angle brackets from
plain email addresses. It is not trivial to add brackets prior to
invoking git check-mailmap.
Instead, modify check_mailmap() to allow such strings as contacts. In
particular, treat any line which cannot be split by split_ident_line as
a simple email address.
No attempt is made to actually parse the address line, or validate that
it is actually an email address. Implementing such validation is not
trivial. Besides, we weren't validating the address between angle
brackets before anyways.

Dozens of files made use of gettext functions, without explicitly
including gettext.h. This made it more difficult to find which files
could remove a dependence on cache.h. Make C files explicitly include
gettext.h if they are using it.
However, while compat/fsmonitor/fsm-ipc-darwin.c should also gain an
include of gettext.h, it was left out to avoid conflicting with an
in-flight topic.

Remove support for the magical "repo-abbrev" comment in .mailmap
files. This was added to .mailmap parsing in [1], as a generalized
feature of the git-shortlog Perl script added earlier in [2].
There was no documentation or tests for this feature, and I don't
think it's used in practice anymore.
What it did was to allow you to specify a single string to be
search-replaced with "/.../" in the .mailmap file. E.g. for
linux.git's current .mailmap:
git archive --remote=git@gitlab.com:linux-kernel/linux.git \
HEAD -- .mailmap | grep -a repo-abbrev
# repo-abbrev: /pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/
Then when running e.g.:
git shortlog --merges --author=Linus -1 v5.10-rc7..v5.10 | grep Merge
We'd emit (the [...] is mine):
Merge tag [...]git://git.kernel.org/.../tip/tip
But will now emit:
Merge tag [...]git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
I think at this point this is just a historical artifact we can get
rid of. It was initially meant for Linus's own use when we integrated
the Perl script[2], but since then it seems he's stopped using it.
Digging through Linus's release announcements on the LKML[3] the last
release I can find that made use of this output is Linux 2.6.25-rc6
back in March 2008[4]. Later on Linus started using --no-merges[5],
and nowadays seems to prefer some custom not-quite-shortlog format of
merges from lieutenants[6].
You will still see it on linux.git if you run "git shortlog" manually
yourself with --merges, with this removed you can still get the same
output with:
git log --pretty=fuller v5.10-rc7..v5.10 |
sed 's!/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/!/.../!g' |
git shortlog
Arguably we should do the same for the search-replacing of "[PATCH]"
at the beginning with "". That seems to be another relic of a bygone
era when linux.git patches would have their E-Mail subject lines
applied as-is by "git am" or whatever. But we documented that feature
in "git-shortlog(1)", and it seems more widely applicable than
something purely kernel-specific.

The strbuf_getline() interface allows a byte other than LF or NUL as
the line terminator, but this is only because I wrote these
codepaths anticipating that there might be a value other than NUL
and LF that could be useful when I introduced line_termination long
time ago. No useful caller that uses other value has emerged.
By now, it is clear that the interface is overly broad without a
good reason. Many codepaths have hardcoded preference to read
either LF terminated or NUL terminated records from their input, and
then call strbuf_getline() with LF or NUL as the third parameter.
This step introduces two thin wrappers around strbuf_getline(),
namely, strbuf_getline_lf() and strbuf_getline_nul(), and
mechanically rewrites these call sites to call either one of
them. The changes contained in this patch are:
* introduction of these two functions in strbuf.[ch]
* mechanical conversion of all callers to strbuf_getline() with
either '\n' or '\0' as the third parameter to instead call the
respective thin wrapper.
After this step, output from "git grep 'strbuf_getline('" would
become a lot smaller. An interim goal of this series is to make
this an empty set, so that we can have strbuf_getline_crlf() take
over the shorter name strbuf_getline().

This patch puts the usage info strings that were not already in docopt-
like format into docopt-like format, which will be a litle easier for
end users and a lot easier for translators. Changes include:
- Placing angle brackets around fill-in-the-blank parameters
- Putting dashes in multiword parameter names
- Adding spaces to [-f|--foobar] to make [-f | --foobar]
- Replacing <foobar>* with [<foobar>...]

Introduce command check-mailmap, similar to check-attr and check-ignore,
which allows direct testing of .mailmap configuration.
As plumbing accessible to scripts and other porcelain, check-mailmap
publishes the stable, well-tested .mailmap functionality employed by
built-in Git commands. Consequently, script authors need not
re-implement .mailmap functionality manually, thus avoiding potential
quirks and behavioral differences.
