Elijah Newren 6723899932 merge-ll: rename from ll-merge
A long term (but rather minor) pet-peeve of mine was the name
ll-merge.[ch]. I thought it made it harder to realize what stuff was
related to merging when I was working on the merge machinery and trying
to improve it.

Further, back in d1cbe1e6d8 ("hash-ll.h: split out of hash.h to remove
dependency on repository.h", 2023-04-22), we have split the portions of
hash.h that do not depend upon repository.h into a "hash-ll.h" (due to
the recommendation to use "ll" for "low-level" in its name[1], but which
I used as a suffix precisely because of my distaste for "ll-merge").
When we discussed adding additional "*-ll.h" files, a request was made
that we use "ll" consistently as either a prefix or a suffix. Since it
is already in use as both a prefix and a suffix, the only way to do so
is to rename some files.

Besides my distaste for the ll-merge.[ch] name, let me also note that
the files
  ll-fsmonitor.h, ll-hash.h, ll-merge.h, ll-object-store.h, ll-read-cache.h
would have essentially nothing to do with each other and make no sense
to group. But giving them the common "ll-" prefix would group them. Using
"-ll" as a suffix thus seems just much more logical to me. Rename
ll-merge.[ch] to merge-ll.[ch] to achieve this consistency, and to
ensure we get a more logical grouping of files.

Heba Waly d3d7172e40 merge: move doc to ll-merge.h
Move the related documentation from Documentation/technical/api-merge.txt
to ll-merge.h as it's easier for the developers to find the usage
information beside the code instead of looking for it in another doc file.

Only the ll-merge related doc is removed from
documentation/technical/api-merge.txt because this information will be
redundant and it'll be hard to keep it up to date and synchronized with
the documentation in ll-merge.h.

Jeff King fe77b416c7 docs: fix cross-directory linkgit references
Most of our documentation is in a single directory, so using
linkgit:git-config[1] just generates a relative link in the
same directory. However, this is not the case with the API
documentation in technical/*, which need to refer to
git-config from the parent directory.

We can fix this by passing a special prefix attribute when building
in a subdirectory, and respecting that prefix in our linkgit
definitions.

We only have to modify the html linkgit definition. For
manpages, we can ignore this for two reasons:

  1. we do not generate actual links to the file in
manpages, but instead just give the name and section of
     the linked manpage

  2. we do not currently build manpages for subdirectories,
     only html

Jonathan Nieder 712516bcac ll-merge: replace flag argument with options struct
Keeping track of the flag bits is proving more trouble than it's
worth. Instead, use a pointer to an options struct like most similar
APIs do.

Callers with no special requests can pass NULL to request the default
options.

Jonathan Nieder 73cf7f713d ll-merge: make flag easier to populate
ll_merge() takes its options in a flag word, which has a few
advantages:

 - options flags can be cheaply passed around in registers, while
   an option struct passed by pointer cannot;

 - callers can easily pass 0 without trouble for no options,
while an option struct passed by value would not allow that.

The downside is that code to populate and access the flag word can be
somewhat opaque. Mitigate that with a few macros.
