brian m. carlson	c5aecfc866	bundle: add new version for use with SHA-256 Currently we detect the hash algorithm in use by the length of the object ID. This is inelegant and prevents us from using a different hash algorithm that is also 256 bits in length. Since we cannot extend the v2 format in a backward-compatible way, let's add a v3 format, which is identical, except for the addition of capabilities, which are prefixed by an at sign. We add "object-format" as the only capability and reject unknown capabilities, since we do not have a network connection and therefore cannot negotiate with the other side. For compatibility, default to the v2 format for SHA-1 and require v3 for SHA-256. In t5510, always use format v3 so we can be sure we produce consistent results across hash algorithms. Since head -n N lists the top N lines instead of the Nth line, let's run our output through sed to normalize it and compare it against a fixed value, which will make sure we get exactly what we're expecting. Nguyễn Thái Ngọc Duy	76a8788c14	doc: keep first level section header in upper case When formatted as a man page, 1st section header is always in upper case even if we write it otherwise. Make all 1st section headers uppercase to keep it close to the final output. This does affect html since case is kept there, but I still think it's a good idea to maintain a consistent style for 1st section headers. Some sections perhaps should become second sections instead, where case is kept, and for better organization. I will update if anyone has suggestions about this. While at there I also make some header more consistent (e.g. examples vs example) and fix a couple minor things here and there. Jeff King	0d0bac67ce	transport: drop support for git-over-rsync The git-over-rsync protocol is inefficient and broken, and has been for a long time. It transfers way more objects than it needs (grabbing all of the remote's "objects/", regardless of which objects we need). It does its own ad-hoc parsing of loose and packed refs from the remote, but doesn't properly override packed refs with loose ones, leading to garbage results (e.g., expecting the other side to have an object pointed to by a stale packed-refs entry, or complaining that the other side has two copies of the refs[1]). This latter breakage means that nobody could have successfully pulled from a moderately active repository since `cd547b4` (fetch/push: readd rsync support, 2007-10-01). We never made an official deprecation notice in the release notes for git's rsync protocol, but the tutorial has marked it as such since `914328a` (Update tutorial., 2005-08-30). And on the mailing list as far back as Oct 2005, we can find Junio mentioning it as having "been deprecated for quite some time."[2,3,4]. So it was old news then; cogito had deprecated the transport in July of 2005[5] (though it did come back briefly when Linus broke git-http-pull!). Of course some people professed their love of rsync through 2006, but Linus clarified in his usual gentle manner[6]: > Thanks! This is why I still use rsync, even though > everybody and their mother tells me "Linus says rsync is > deprecated." No. You're using rsync because you're actively doing something _wrong_. The deprecation sentiment was reinforced in 2008, with a mention that cloning via rsync is broken (with no fix)[7]. Even the commit porting rsync over to C from shell (`cd547b4`) lists it as deprecated! So between the 10 years of informal warnings, and the fact that it has been severely broken since 2007, it's probably safe to simply remove it without further deprecation warnings. Avoid alarming the readers by adding "-b master" to the example. A better fix may be to arrange the bundle created in the earlier step to record HEAD, so that it can be cloned without this workaround. Jeff King	6cf378f0cb	docs: stop using asciidoc no-inline-literal In asciidoc 7, backticks like `foo` produced a typographic effect, but did not otherwise affect the syntax. In asciidoc 8, backticks introduce an "inline literal" inside which markup is not interpreted. To keep compatibility with existing documents, asciidoc 8 has a "no-inline-literal" attribute to keep the old behavior. We enabled this so that the documentation could be built on either version. It has been several years now, and asciidoc 7 is no longer in wide use. We can now decide whether or not we want inline literals on their own merits, which are: 1. The source is much easier to read when the literal contains punctuation. You can use `master~1` instead of `master{tilde}1`. 2. They are less error-prone. Because of point (1), we tend to make mistakes and forget the extra layer of quoting. This patch removes the no-inline-literal attribute from the Makefile and converts every use of backticks in the documentation to an inline literal (they must be cleaned up, or the example above would literally show "{tilde}" in the output). Problematic sites were found by grepping for '`.[{\\]' and examined and fixed manually. The results were then verified by comparing the output of "html2text" on the set of generated html pages. Doing so revealed that in addition to making the source more readable, this patch fixes several formatting bugs: - HTML rendering used the ellipsis character instead of literal "..." in code examples (like "git log A...B") - some code examples used the right-arrow character instead of '->' because they failed to quote - api-config.txt did not quote tilde, and the resulting HTML contained a bogus snippet like: <tt><sub></tt> foo <tt></sub>bar</tt> which caused some parsers to choke and omit whole sections of the page. - git-commit.txt confused ``foo`` (backticks inside a literal) with ``foo'' (matched double-quotes) - mentions of `A U Thor <author@example.com>` used to erroneously auto-generate a mailto footnote for author@example.com - the description of --word-diff=plain incorrectly showed the output as "[-removed-] and {added}", not "{+added+}". - using "prime" notation like: commit `C` and its replacement `C'` confused asciidoc into thinking that everything between the first backtick and the final apostrophe were meant to be inside matched quotes - asciidoc got confused by the escaping of some of our asterisks. In particular, `credential.\` and `credential.<url>.\*` properly escaped the asterisk in the first case, but literally passed through the backslash in the second case. Jeff King	48bb914ed6	doc: drop author/documentation sections from most pages The point of these sections is generally to: 1. Give credit where it is due. 2. Give the reader an idea of where to ask questions or file bug reports. But they don't do a good job of either case. For (1), they are out of date and incomplete. A much more accurate answer can be gotten through shortlog or blame. For (2), the correct contact point is generally git@vger, and even if you wanted to cc the contact point, the out-of-date and incomplete fields mean you're likely sending to somebody useless. So let's drop the fields entirely from all manpages except git(1) itself. We already point people to the mailing list for bug reports there, and we can update the Authors section to give credit to the major contributors and point to shortlog and blame for more information. Each page has a "This is part of git" footer, so people can follow that to the main git manpage.	14 years ago

Jonathan Nieder	e1906c4669	Documentation: remove stray backslash from "git bundle" manual In v1.6.2.2~6^2~4 (Documentation: minor grammatical fixes and rewording in git-bundle.txt, 2009-03-22), backslashes were introduced before ~ to avoid introducing unintentional superscripts. In one paragraph there is only one ~, though, making that not a candidate for quoting, and asciidoc 8.5.8 passes the backslash through so the man page says "\~10..master". Maybe there is an asciidoc behavior change involved. In any case, we should replace tildes with a {tilde} entity which means the same thing regardless of where it is found. Thomas Rast	0b444cdb19	Documentation: spell 'git cmd' without dash throughout The documentation was quite inconsistent when spelling 'git cmd' if it only refers to the program, not to some specific invocation syntax: both 'git-cmd' and 'git cmd' spellings exist. The current trend goes towards dashless forms, and there is precedent in `647ac70` (git-svn.txt: stop using dash-form of commands., 2009-07-07) to actively eliminate the dashed variants. Replace 'git-cmd' with 'git cmd' throughout, except where git-shell, git-cvsserver, git-upload-pack, git-receive-pack, and git-upload-archive are concerned, because those really live in the $PATH.	15 years ago

Instead of just showing different ways to create and use bundles in a disconnected fashion, the rewritten example first shows the simplest "full cycle" of sneakernet workflow, and then introduces various variations. The words are mostly taken from Junio's outline. I only reformatted them and proofread to make sure the end result flows naturally. Jonathan Nieder	b1889c36d8	Documentation: be consistent about "git-" versus "git " Since the git-* commands are not installed in $(bindir), using "git-command <parameters>" in examples in the documentation is not a good idea. On the other hand, it is nice to be able to refer to each command using one hyphenated word. (There is no escaping it, anyway: man page names cannot have spaces in them.) This patch retains the dash in naming an operation, command, program, process, or action. Complete command lines that can be entered at a shell (i.e., without options omitted) are made to use the dashless form. The changes consist only of replacing some spaces with hyphens and vice versa. Johannes Schindelin	2e0afafebd	Add git-bundle: move objects and references by archive Some workflows require use of repositories on machines that cannot be connected, preventing use of git-fetch / git-push to transport objects and references between the repositories. git-bundle provides an alternate transport mechanism, effectively allowing git-fetch and git-pull to operate using sneakernet transport. `git-bundle create` allows the user to create a bundle containing one or more branches or tags, but with specified basis assumed to exist on the target repository. At the receiving end, git-bundle acts like git-fetch-pack, allowing the user to invoke git-fetch or git-pull using the bundle file as the URL. git-fetch and git-ls-remote determine they have a bundle URL by checking that the URL points to a file, but are otherwise unchanged in operation with bundles. The original patch was done by Mark Levedahl <mdl123@verizon.net>. It was updated to make git-bundle a builtin, and get rid of the tar format: now, the first line is supposed to say "# v2 git bundle", the next lines either contain a prerequisite ("-" followed by the hash of the needed commit), or a ref (the hash of a commit, followed by the name of the ref), and finally the pack.
