"git fetch" honors "remote.<remote>.followRemoteHEAD" settings to
tweak the remote-tracking HEAD in "refs/remotes/<remote>/HEAD".

When "git fetch $remote" notices that refs/remotes/$remote/HEAD is
missing and discovers what branch the other side points with its
HEAD, refs/remotes/$remote/HEAD is updated to point to it.

When running "remote set-head" manually it is unlikely, that the user
would actually like to have "fetch" always update the remote/HEAD. On
the contrary, it is more likely, that the user would expect remote/HEAD
to stay the way they manually set it, and just forgot about having
"followRemoteHEAD" set to "always".
When "followRemoteHEAD" is set to "always" make running "remote
set-head" change the config to "warn".

When adding a remote to bare repository with "git remote add --mirror",
running fetch will fail to update HEAD to the remote's HEAD, since it
does not know how to handle bare repositories. On the other hand HEAD
already has content, since "git init --bare" has already set HEAD to
whatever is the default branch set for the user. Unless this - by chance
- is the same as the remote's HEAD, HEAD will be pointing to a bad
symref. Teach set_head to handle bare repositories, by overwriting HEAD
so it mirrors the remote's HEAD.
Note, that in this case overriding the local HEAD reference is
necessary, since HEAD will exist before fetch can be run, but this
should not be an issue, since the whole purpose of --mirror is to be an
exact mirror of the remote, so following any changes to HEAD makes
sense.
Also note, that although "git remote set-head" also fails when trying to
update the remote's locally tracked HEAD in a mirrored bare repository,
the usage of the command does not make much sense after this patch:
fetch will update the remote HEAD correctly, and setting it manually to
something else is antithetical to the concept of mirroring.

When cloning a repository remote/HEAD is created, but when the user
creates a repository with git init, and later adds a remote, remote/HEAD
is only created if the user explicitly runs a variant of "remote
set-head". Attempt to set remote/HEAD during fetch, if the user does not
have it already set. Silently ignore any errors.

Currently, set-head --auto will print a message saying "remote/HEAD set
to branch", which implies something was changed.
Change the output of --auto, so the output actually reflects what was
done: a) set a previously unset HEAD, b) change HEAD because remote
changed or c) no updates. As edge cases, if HEAD is changed from
a previous symbolic reference that was not a remote branch, explicitly
call attention to this fact, and also notify the user if the previous
reference was not a symbolic reference.

Consider the bare repository called "mirror" in the test. Running `git
remote add --mirror -f origin ../one` will not change HEAD, consequently
if init.defaultBranch is not the same as what HEAD in the remote
("one"), HEAD in "mirror" will be pointing to a non-existent reference.
Hence if "mirror" is used as a remote by yet another repository,
ls-remote will not show HEAD. On the other hand, if init.defaultBranch
happens to match HEAD in "one", then ls-remote will show HEAD.
Since the "ci/run-build-and-tests.sh" script globally exports
GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=main for some (but not all) jobs,
there may be a drift in some tests between how the test repositories are
set up in the CI and during local testing, if the test itself uses
"master" as default instead of "main". In particular, this happens in
t5505-remote.sh. This issue does not manifest currently, as the test
does not do any remote HEAD manipulation where this would come up, but
should such things be added, a locally passing test would break the CI
and vice-versa.
Set GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=main in t5505-remote to be
consistent with the CI.

In `match_explicit()`, we try to match a source ref with a destination
ref according to a refspec item. This matching sometimes requires us to
allocate a new source spec so that it looks like we expect. And while we
in some end up assigning this allocated ref as `peer_ref`, which hands
over ownership of it to the caller, in other cases we don't. We neither
free it though, causing a memory leak.
Fix the leak by creating a common exit path where we can easily free the
source ref in case it is allocated and hasn't been handed over to the
caller.

Because remote.*.url is treated as a multi-valued key, there is no way
to override previous config. So for example if you have
remote.origin.url set to some wrong value, doing:
git -c remote.origin.url=right fetch
would not work. It would append "right" to the list, which means we'd
still fetch from "wrong" (since subsequent values are used only as push
urls).
Let's provide a mechanism to reset the list, like we do for other
multi-valued keys (e.g., credential.helper, http.extraheaders, and
merge.suppressDest all use this "empty string means reset" pattern).

They are equivalents and the former still exists, so as long as the
only change this commit makes are to rewrite test_i18ngrep to
test_grep, there won't be any new bug, even if there still are
callers of test_i18ngrep remaining in the tree, or when merged to
other topics that add new uses of test_i18ngrep.
This patch was produced more or less with
git grep -l -e 'test_i18ngrep ' 't/t[0-9][0-9][0-9][0-9]-*.sh' |
xargs perl -p -i -e 's/test_i18ngrep /test_grep /'
and a good way to sanity check the result yourself is to run the
above in a checkout of c4603c1c (test framework: further deprecate
test_i18ngrep, 2023-10-31) and compare the resulting working tree
contents with the result of applying this patch to the same commit.
You'll see that test_i18ngrep in a few t/lib-*.sh files corrected,
in addition to the manual reproduction.

"git remote rename" failed to rename a remote without fetch
refspec, which has been corrected.

We return an error when trying to rename a remote that has no fetch
refspec:
$ git config --unset-all remote.origin.fetch
$ git remote rename origin foo
fatal: could not unset 'remote.foo.fetch'
To make things even more confusing, we actually _do_ complete the config
modification, via git_config_rename_section(). After that we try to
rewrite the fetch refspec (to say refs/remotes/foo instead of origin).
But our call to git_config_set_multivar() to remove the existing entries
fails, since there aren't any, and it calls die().
We could fix this by using the "gently" form of the config call, and
checking the error code. But there is an even simpler fix: if we know
that there are no refspecs to rewrite, then we can skip that part
entirely.

'git remote' parses its subcommands with a long list of if-else if
statements. parse-options has just learned to parse subcommands, so
let's use that facility instead, with the benefits of shorter code,
handling unknown subcommands, and listing subcommands for Bash
completion. Make sure that the default operation mode doesn't accept
any arguments; and while at it remove the capitalization of the error
message and adjust the test checking it accordingly.
Note that 'git remote' has both 'remove' and 'rm' subcommands, and the
former is preferred [1], so hide the latter for completion.
Note also that the functions implementing each subcommand only accept
the 'argc' and '**argv' parameters, so add a (unused) '*prefix'
parameter to make them match the type expected by parse-options, and
thus avoid casting a bunch of function pointers.

'git remote' without a subcommand defaults to listing all remotes and
doesn't accept any arguments except the '-v|--verbose' option.
We are about to teach parse-options to handle subcommands, and update
'git remote' to make use of that new feature. So let's add some tests
to make sure that the upcoming changes don't inadvertently change the
behavior in these cases.

Tweak tests so that they still work when the "git init" template
did not create .git/info directory.

By default, the git remote show command will query data from remotes to
show data about what might be done on a future git fetch. This process
currently does not handle negative refspecs. This can be confusing,
because the show command will list refs as if they would be fetched. For
example if the fetch refspec "^refs/heads/pr/*", it still displays the
following:

Fix this by adding an additional check inside of get_ref_states. If a
ref matches one of the negative refspecs, mark it as skipped instead of
marking it as new or tracked.
With this change, we now report remote branches that are skipped due to
negative refspecs properly:

By showing the refs as skipped, it helps clarify that these references
won't actually be fetched.
This does not properly handle refs going stale due to a newly added
negative refspec. In addition, git remote prune doesn't handle that
negative refspec case either. Fixing that requires digging into
get_stale_heads and handling the case of a ref which exists on the
remote but is omitted due to a negative refspec locally.
Add a new test case which covers the functionality above, as well as a
new expected failure indicating the poor overlap with stale refs.

As noted in c8a58ac5a5 (Revert "Don't create the $GIT_DIR/branches
directory on init", 2009-10-31) there was an attempt long ago in
0cc5691a8b (Don't create the $GIT_DIR/branches directory on init,
2009-10-30) to get rid of the legacy "branches" directory.
We should probably get rid of its creation by removing the
"templates/branches--" file. But whatever our default behavior, our
tests should be tightened up to explicitly create the .git/branches
directory if they rely on our default templates, to make the
dependency on those templates clear.
So let's amend the two tests that would fail if .git/branches wasn't
created. To do this introduce a new "TEST_CREATE_REPO_NO_TEMPLATE"
variable, which we'll set before sourcing test-lib.sh, and change the
"git clone" and "git init" commands in the tests themselves to
explicitly pass "--template=".
This way they won't get a .git/branches in either their top-level
.git, or in the ones they create. We can then amend the tests that
rely on the ".git/branches" directory existing to create it
explicitly, and to remove it after its creation.
This new "TEST_CREATE_REPO_NO_TEMPLATE" variable is a less
heavy-handed version of the "NO_SET_GIT_TEMPLATE_DIR" variable. See
a94d305bf8 (t/t0001-init.sh: add test for 'init with init.templatedir
set', 2010-02-26) for its implementation.
Unlike "TEST_CREATE_REPO_NO_TEMPLATE", this new
"TEST_CREATE_REPO_NO_TEMPLATE" variable is narrowly scoped to what the
"git init" in test-lib.sh does, as opposed to the global effect of
"NO_SET_GIT_TEMPLATE_DIR" and the setting of "GIT_TEMPLATE_DIR" in
wrap-for-bin.sh.
I experimented with adding a new "GIT_WRAP_FOR_BIN_VIA_TEST_LIB"
variable set in test-lib.sh, which would cause wrap-for-bin.sh to not
set GIT_TEMPLATE_DIR, GITPERLLIB etc, as we set those in
test-lib.sh. I think that's a viable approach, but it would interact
e.g. with the appending feature of GITPERLLIB added in
8bade1e12e (wrap-for-bin: make bin-wrappers chainable, 2013-07-04).
Doing so would allow us to convert the tests in t0001-init.sh that now
use "NO_SET_GIT_TEMPLATE_DIR" to simply unset "GIT_TEMPLATE_DIR" in a
sub-shell before invoking "git init" or "git clone". I think that
approach is worth pursuing, but let's table it for now. Some future
wrap-for-bin.sh refactoring can try to address it.

`git remote -v` (`--verbose`) lists down the names of remotes along with
their URLs. It would be beneficial for users to also specify the filter
types for promisor remotes. Something like this -

When renaming a remote, Git needs to rename all remote tracking
references to the remote's new name (e.g., renaming
"refs/remotes/old/foo" to "refs/remotes/new/foo" when renaming a remote
from "old" to "new").
This can be somewhat slow when there are many references to rename,
since each rename is done in a separate call to rename_ref() as opposed
to grouping all renames together into the same transaction. It would be
nice to execute all renames as a single transaction, but there is a
snag: the reference transaction backend doesn't support renames during a
transaction (only individually, via rename_ref()).
The reasons there are described in more detail in [1], but the main
problem is that in order to preserve the existing reflog, it must be
moved while holding both locks (i.e., on "oldname" and "newname"), and
the ref transaction code doesn't support inserting arbitrary actions
into the middle of a transaction like that.
As an aside, adding support for this to the ref transaction code is
less straightforward than inserting both a ref_update() and ref_delete()
call into the same transaction. rename_ref()'s special handling to
detect D/F conflicts would need to be rewritten for the transaction code
if we wanted to proactively catch D/F conflicts when renaming a
reference during a transaction. The reftable backend could support this
much more readily because of its lack of D/F conflicts.
Instead of a more complex modification to the ref transaction code,
display a progress meter when running verbosely in order to convince the
user that Git is doing work while renaming a remote.
This is mostly done as-expected, with the minor caveat that we
intentionally count symrefs renames twice, since renaming a symref takes
place over two separate calls (one to delete the old one, and another to
create the new one).

Update C code that sets a few configuration variables when a remote
is configured so that it spells configuration variable names in the
canonical camelCase.

config, 2020-02-01) and does the right thing, but nothing tested that
we wrote out the canonical camel-cased form.

Change "git remote add" so that it adds a *.tagOpt key, and not the
lower-cased *.tagopt on "git remote add --no-tags", just as "git clone
--no-tags" would do.
This doesn't matter for anything that reads the config. It's just
prettier if we write config keys in their documented camelCase form to
user-readable config files.
When I added support for "clone -no-tags" in 0dab2468ee (clone: add a
--no-tags option to clone without tags, 2017-04-26) I made it use
the *.tagOpt form, but the older "git remote add" added in
111fb85865 (remote add: add a --[no-]tags option, 2010-04-20) has
been using *.tagopt all this time.
It's easy enough to add a test for this, so let's do that. We can't
use "git config -l" there, because it'll normalize the keys to their
lower-cased form. Let's add the test for "git clone" too for good
measure, not just to the "git remote" codepath we're fixing.

itself due to other changes between "master" and "next/seen" which add
new test_i18ncmp uses.

In 66713e84e7 (tests: prepare aligned mentions of the default branch
name, 2020-10-23), we started that transition, trying to prepare for a
time when `git init` would use that name for the initial branch.
Even if that time has not arrived, we can complete the transition by
making the test script independent of the default branch name. This also
allows us to drop the `PREPARE_FOR_MAIN_BRANCH` prereq from four test
cases.

We introduced the `PREPARE_FOR_MAIN_BRANCH` prereq for the sole purpose
of allowing us to perform the non-trivial adjustments regarding the
`master` -> `main` rename before the automatable ones.
Now that the transition is almost complete, we can stop using it in most
instances. The only two exceptions are t5526 and t9902: at the time of
writing, there are other patches in flight that touch these test
scripts, therefore their transition to `main` is postponed to a later
date.
This patch is the result of this command:

This allows us to define `GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=main`
for those tests.

In addition to the manual adjustment to let the `linux-gcc` CI job run
the test suite with `master` and then with `main`, this patch makes sure
that GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME is set in all test scripts
that currently rely on the initial branch name being `master by default.
To determine which test scripts to mark up, the first step was to
force-set the default branch name to `master` in
- all test scripts that contain the keyword `master`,
- t4211, which expects `t/t4211/history.export` with a hard-coded ref to
initialize the default branch,
- t5560 because it sources `t/t556x_common` which uses `master`,
- t8002 and t8012 because both source `t/annotate-tests.sh` which also
uses `master`)
This trick was performed by this command:

After that, careful, manual inspection revealed that some of the test
scripts containing the needle `master` do not actually rely on a
specific default branch name: either they mention `master` only in a
comment, or they initialize that branch specificially, or they do not
actually refer to the current default branch. Therefore, the
aforementioned modification was undone in those test scripts thusly:

We excluded one set of test scripts in these commands, though: the range
of `git p4` tests. The reason? `git p4` stores the (foreign) remote
branch in the branch called `p4/master`, which is obviously not the
default branch. Manual analysis revealed that only five of these tests
actually require a specific default branch name to pass; They were
modified thusly:

Exit codes from "git remote add" etc. were not usable by scripted
callers.

Change the exit code for the likes of "git remote add/rename" to exit
with 2 if the remote in question doesn't exist, and 3 if it
does. Before we'd just die() and exit with the general 128 exit code.
This changes the output message from e.g.:
fatal: remote origin already exists.
To:
error: remote origin already exists.
Which I believe is a feature, since we generally use "fatal" for the
generic errors, and "error" for the more specific ones with a custom
exit code, but this part of the change may break code that already
relies on stderr parsing (not that we ever supported that...).
The motivation for this is a discussion around some code in GitLab's
gitaly which wanted to check this, and had to parse stderr to do so:

It's worth noting as an aside that a method of checking this that
doesn't rely on that is to check with "git config" whether the value
in question does or doesn't exist. That introduces a TOCTOU race
condition, but on the other hand this code (e.g. "git remote add")
already has a TOCTOU race.
We go through the config.lock for the actual setting of the config,
but the pseudocode logic is:
read_config();
check_config_and_arg_sanity();
save_config();
So e.g. if a sleep() is added right after the remote_is_configured()
check in add() we'll clobber remote.NAME.url, and add another (usually
duplicate) remote.NAME.fetch entry (and other values, depending on
invocation).

In some tests, the default branch name is part of aligned output. As we
want to change the default branch name to `main`, which is two
characters shorter than the old default branch name, we will have to
adjust those tests.
Since we use the original default branch name until the entire test
suite has been adjusted accordingly, the touched test cases need to be
guarded by a prereq (that is so far disabled so that they are skipped
for now).
The test cases that depend on those test cases that are newly guarded by
that prereq naturally have to be guarded, too.

As our test suite partially reflects how we work in the Git project, it
is natural that the branch name `pu` was used in a couple places.
Since that branch was renamed to `seen`, let's use the new name
consistently.

When renaming a remote with
git remote rename X Y
git remote remove X
Git already renames or removes any branch.<name>.remote and
branch.<name>.pushRemote configurations if their value is X.
However remote.pushDefault needs a more gentle approach, as this may be
set in a non-repo configuration file. In such a case only a warning is
printed, such as:
warning: The global configuration remote.pushDefault in:
$HOME/.gitconfig:35
now names the non-existent remote origin
It is changed to remote.pushDefault = Y or removed when set in a repo
configuration though.

Add a test asserting that "git push origin <src>:<dst>" where <src> is
a branch, tag, tree or blob in refs/remotes/* doesn't DWYM when <dst>
is unqualified. This has never been the case, but there haven't been
any tests for this behavior.
See f88395ac23 ("Renaming push.", 2005-08-03), bb9fca80ce ("git-push:
Update description of refspecs and add examples", 2007-06-09) and
f8aae12034 ("push: allow unqualified dest refspecs to DWIM",
2008-04-23) which are most relevant commits that have changed or
documented the behavior of the DWYM feature in the past.
These tests were originally meant to lead up to a patch that made
refs/remotes/* on the LHS imply refs/heads/* on the RHS, see [1]. That
patch proved controversial and may not ever land in git.git, but we
should have the tests that remind us what the current behavior is in
case it's ever changed.

Add an advice to the recently improved error message added in
f8aae12034 ("push: allow unqualified dest refspecs to DWIM",
2008-04-23).
Now with advice.pushUnqualifiedRefName=true (on by default) we show a
hint about how to proceed:
$ ./git-push avar v2.19.0^{commit}:newbranch -n
error: The destination you provided is not a full refname (i.e.,
starting with "refs/"). We tried to guess what you meant by:
- Looking for a ref that matches 'newbranch' on the remote side.
- Checking if the <src> being pushed ('v2.19.0^{commit}')
is a ref in "refs/{heads,tags}/". If so we add a corresponding
refs/{heads,tags}/ prefix on the remote side.
Neither worked, so we gave up. You must fully qualify the ref.
hint: The <src> part of the refspec is a commit object.
hint: Did you mean to create a new branch by pushing to
hint: 'v2.19.0^{commit}:refs/heads/newbranch'?
error: failed to push some refs to 'git@github.com:avar/git.git'
When trying to push a tag, tree or a blob we suggest that perhaps the
user meant to push them to refs/tags/ instead.
The if/else duplication for all of OBJ_{COMMIT,TAG,TREE,BLOB} is
unfortunate, but is required to correctly mark the messages for
translation. See the discussion in
<87r2gxebsi.fsf@evledraar.gmail.com> about that.

When adding new remote name with empty string, git will print the
following error message,
fatal: '' is not a valid remote name\n
But when removing remote name with empty string as input, git shows the
empty string without quote,
fatal: No such remote: \n
To make these error messages consistent, quote the name of the remote
that we tried and failed to find.

The test_must_be_empty() wrapper was introduced in ca8d148daf ("test:
