Martin von Zweigbergk	7791a1d9b9	Documentation: use [verse] for SYNOPSIS sections The SYNOPSIS sections of most commands that span several lines already use [verse] to retain line breaks. Most commands that don't span several lines seem not to use [verse]. In the HTML output, [verse] does not only preserve line breaks, but also makes the section indented, which causes a slight inconsistency between commands that use [verse] and those that don't. Use [verse] in all SYNOPSIS sections for consistency. Also remove the blank lines from git-fetch.txt and git-rebase.txt to align with the other man pages. In the case of git-rebase.txt, which already uses [verse], the blank line makes the [verse] not apply to the last line, so removing the blank line also makes the formatting within the document more consistent. While at it, add single quotes to 'git cvsimport' for consistency with other commands. Jeff King	48bb914ed6	doc: drop author/documentation sections from most pages The point of these sections is generally to: 1. Give credit where it is due. 2. Give the reader an idea of where to ask questions or file bug reports. But they don't do a good job of either case. For (1), they are out of date and incomplete. A much more accurate answer can be gotten through shortlog or blame. For (2), the correct contact point is generally git@vger, and even if you wanted to cc the contact point, the out-of-date and incomplete fields mean you're likely sending to somebody useless. So let's drop the fields entirely from all manpages except git(1) itself. We already point people to the mailing list for bug reports there, and we can update the Authors section to give credit to the major contributors and point to shortlog and blame for more information. Each page has a "This is part of git" footer, so people can follow that to the main git manpage.	14 years ago

Michael J Gruber	4a689afb03	difftool: provide basename to external tools Currently, only configured diff helpers get the basename of the file being compared. Tools specified with "git difftool -x" only get the names of temporary files for the different versions. Export BASE so that an external tool can read the name from the environment. Rather than using a third argument, this avoids breaking existing scripts which may somewhat carelessly be using "$@" rather than "$1" "$2". Jeff King	49bd56a5f7	docs: clarify git diff modes of operation It is an oversimplification to say that we can take "[<commit> [<commit>]]", as it really depends on what options have been given. Instead, let's list the major modes of operation separately, as we do in other manpages. This patch also adjusts the text immediately after the synopsis to match the lines given in the synopsis. For git-difftool, which has the same issue, let's refer the user to the git-diff manpage rather than spelling it all out again. Arguments to '--extcmd' can be specified separately, which was not originally possible. This also fixes the brief help text so that it mentions both '-x' and '--extcmd'. Thomas Rast	0b444cdb19	Documentation: spell 'git cmd' without dash throughout The documentation was quite inconsistent when spelling 'git cmd' if it only refers to the program, not to some specific invocation syntax: both 'git-cmd' and 'git cmd' spellings exist. The current trend goes towards dashless forms, and there is precedent in `647ac70` (git-svn.txt: stop using dash-form of commands., 2009-07-07) to actively eliminate the dashed variants. Replace 'git-cmd' with 'git cmd' throughout, except where git-shell, git-cvsserver, git-upload-pack, git-receive-pack, and git-upload-archive are concerned, because those really live in the $PATH.	15 years ago
David Aguilar	1c6f5b52b7	difftool: Allow specifying unconfigured commands with --extcmd git-difftool requires difftool.<tool>.cmd configuration even when tools use the standard "$diffcmd $from $to" form. This teaches git-difftool to run these tools in lieu of configuration by allowing the command to be specified on the command line. This teaches git-difftool to honor 'diff.guitool' when the '--gui' option is specified. This allows users to configure their preferred command-line diff tool in 'diff.tool' and a GUI diff tool in 'diff.guitool'. David Aguilar	2464456a6a	contrib/difftool: use a separate config namespace for difftool commands Some users have different mergetool and difftool settings, so teach difftool to read config vars from the difftool.* namespace. This allows having distinct configurations for the diff and merge scenarios. We don't want to force existing users to set new values for no reason so difftool falls back to existing mergetool config variables when the difftool equivalents are not defined. David Aguilar	5c38ea31f3	contrib: add 'git difftool' for launching common merge tools 'git difftool' is a git command that allows you to compare and edit files between revisions using common merge tools. 'git difftool' does what 'git mergetool' does but its use is for non-merge situations such as when preparing commits or comparing changes against the index. It uses the same configuration variables as 'git mergetool' and provides the same command-line interface as 'git diff'.
