Patrick Steinhardt 0578f1e66a global: adapt callers to use generic hash context helpers
Adapt callers to use generic hash context helpers instead of using the
hash algorithm to update them. This makes the callsites easier to reason
about and removes the possibility that the wrong hash algorithm is used
to update the hash context's state. And as a nice side effect this also
gets rid of a bunch of users of `the_hash_algo`.

Patrick Steinhardt 7346e340f1 hash: stop typedeffing the hash context
We generally avoid using `typedef` in the Git codebase. One exception
though is the `git_hash_ctx`, likely because it used to be a union
rather than a struct until the preceding commit refactored it. But now
that it is a normal `struct` there isn't really a need for a typedef
anymore.

Drop the typedef and adapt all callers accordingly.

Patrick Steinhardt 80c9e70ebe global: trivial conversions to fix `-Wsign-compare` warnings
We have a bunch of loops which iterate up to an unsigned boundary using
a signed index, which generates warnigs because we compare a signed and
unsigned value in the loop condition. Address these sites for trivial
cases and enable `-Wsign-compare` warnings for these code units.

This patch only adapts those code units where we can drop the
`DISABLE_SIGN_COMPARE_WARNINGS` macro in the same step.

Patrick Steinhardt 41f43b8243 global: mark code units that generate warnings with `-Wsign-compare`
Mark code units that generate warnings with `-Wsign-compare`. This
allows for a structured approach to get rid of all such warnings over
time in a way that can be easily measured.

Patrick Steinhardt 8a676bdc5c hash-ll: merge with "hash.h"
The "hash-ll.h" header was introduced via d1cbe1e6d8 (hash-ll.h: split
out of hash.h to remove dependency on repository.h, 2023-04-22) to make
explicit the split between hash-related functions that rely on the
global `the_repository`, and those that don't. This split is no longer
necessary now that we we have removed the reliance on `the_repository`.

Merge "hash-ll.h" back into "hash.h". This causes some code units to not
include "repository.h" anymore, which requires us to add some forward
declarations.

Elijah Newren bc5c5ec044 cache.h: remove this no-longer-used header
Since this header showed up in some places besides just #include
statements, update/clean-up/remove those other places as well.

Note that compat/fsmonitor/fsm-path-utils-darwin.c previously got
away with violating the rule that all files must start with an include
of git-compat-util.h (or a short-list of alternate headers that happen
to include it first). This change exposed the violation and caused it
to stop building correctly; fix it by having it include
git-compat-util.h first, as per policy.

Elijah Newren 08c46a499a read-cache*.h: move declarations for read-cache.c functions from cache.h
For the functions defined in read-cache.c, move their declarations from
cache.h to a new header, read-cache-ll.h. Also move some related inline
functions from cache.h to read-cache.h. The purpose of the
read-cache-ll.h/read-cache.h split is that about 70% of the sites don't
need the inline functions and the extra headers they include.

Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 338abb0f04 builtins + test helpers: use return instead of exit() in cmd_*
Change various cmd_* functions that claim to return an "int" to use
"return" instead of exit() to indicate an exit code. These were not
marked with NORETURN, and by directly exit()-ing we'll skip the
cleanup git.c would otherwise do (e.g. closing fd's, erroring if we
can't). See run_builtin() in git.c.

In the case of shell.c and sh-i18n--envsubst.c this was the result of
an incomplete migration to using a cmd_main() in 3f2e2297b9 (add an
extra level of indirection to main(), 2016-07-01).

This was spotted by SunCC 12.5 on Solaris 10 (gcc210 on the gccfarm).

brian m. carlson 37649b7f80 t/helper: add a test helper to compute hash speed
Add a utility (which is less for the testsuite and more for developers)
that can compute hash speeds for whatever hash algorithms are
implemented. This allows developers to test their personal systems to
determine the performance characteristics of various algorithms.
