Daniel Barkalow	c1d45cf7b0	Require a struct remote in transport_get() cmd_ls_remote() was calling transport_get() with a NULL remote and a non-NULL url in the case where it was run outside a git repository. This involved a bunch of ill-tested special cases. Instead, simply get the struct remote for the URL with remote_get(), which works fine outside a git repository, and can also take global options into account. This fixes a tiny and obscure bug where "git ls-remote" without a repo didn't support global url.*.insteadOf, even though "git clone" and "git ls-remote" in any repo did. Stephan Beyer	1b1dd23f2d	Make usage strings dash-less When you misuse a git command, you are shown the usage string. But this is currently shown in the dashed form. So if you just copy what you see, it will not work, when the dashed form is no longer supported. This patch makes git commands show the dash-less version. For shell scripts that do not specify OPTIONS_SPEC, git-sh-setup.sh generates a dash-less usage string now. Now it will always set it to 0 when we are inside a repository. Also remove now unnecessary initializations in the callers of this function. Pearce	52dce39762	Fix 'git remote show' regression on empty repository in 1.5.4 Back in `18f7c51c` we switched git-ls-remote/git-peek-remote to use the transport backend, rather than do everything itself. As part of that switch we started to produce a non-zero exit status if no refs were received from the remote peer, which happens when the remote peer has no commits pushed to it yet. (E.g. Daniel Barkalow	ba227857d2	Reduce the number of connects when fetching This shares the connection between getting the remote ref list and getting objects in the first batch. (A second connection is still used to follow tags). When we do not fetch objects (i.e. either ls-remote disconnects after getting list of refs, or we decide we are already up-to-date), we clean up the connection properly; otherwise the connection is left open in need of cleaning up to avoid getting an error message from the remote end when ssh is used. Pearce	7c2c6ee7e0	Reteach builtin-ls-remote to understand remotes Prior to being made a builtin git-ls-remote understood that when it was given a remote name we wanted it to resolve that to the pre-configured URL and connect to that location. Johannes Sixt	98158e9cfd	Change git_connect() to return a struct child_process instead of a pid_t. This prepares the API of git_connect() and finish_connect() to operate on a struct child_process. Currently, we just use that object as a placeholder for the pid that we used to return. A follow-up patch will change the implementation of git_connect() and finish_connect() to make full use of the object. Old code had early-return-on-error checks at the calling sites of git_connect(), but since git_connect() dies on errors anyway, these checks were removed. Linus Torvalds	2718ff098a	Improve git-peek-remote This makes git-peek-remote able to basically do everything that git-ls-remote does (but obviously just for the native protocol, so no http[s]: or rsync: support). The default behaviour is the same, but you can now give a mixture of "--refs", "--tags" and "--heads" flags, where "--refs" forces git-peek-remote to only show real refs (ie none of the fakey tag lookups, but also not the special pseudo-refs like HEAD and MERGE_HEAD). The "--tags" and "--heads" flags respectively limit the output to just regular tags and heads, of course. You can still also ask to limit them by name too. You can combine the flags, so git peek-remote --refs --tags . will show all local _true_ tags, without the generated tag lookups (compare the output without the "--refs" flag). And "--tags --heads" will show both tags and heads, but will avoid (for example) any special refs outside of the standard locations. I'm also planning on adding a "--ignore-local" flag that allows us to ask it to ignore any refs that we already have in the local tree, but that's an independent thing. Add a git-peek-remote command that talks with upload-pack the same way git-fetch-pack and git-clone-pack do, to show the references the remote side has on the standard output. A later patch introduces git-ls-remote that implements a UI to store tag values retrieved using this command.
