commit-graph, fuzz: add fuzzer for commit-graph Break load_commit_graph_one() into a new function, parse_commit_graph(). The latter function operates on arbitrary buffers, which makes it suitable as a fuzzing target. Since parse_commit_graph() is only called by load_commit_graph_one() (and the fuzzer described below), we omit error messages that would be duplicated by the caller. Adds fuzz-commit-graph.c, which provides a fuzzing entry point compatible with libFuzzer (and possibly other fuzzing engines). This means that if you add a file or directory called "git" (for example) inside a subdirectory, it will be erroneously ignored. This patch was done mechanically with "s/^[^*]/\/&/" with one exception: instead of ignoring gitk-wish, we should gitk-git/gitk-wish (arguably, this should be done in gitk-git/.gitignore, but because that is a subtree merge from elsewhere, this is easier). Makefile: Track changes to LDFLAGS and relink when necessary Some profiling tools (e.g., google-perftools and mutrace) work by linking in a new library into the executables. When using these tools it is convenient to only relink instead of doing a full make clean; make cycle. This change complements the auto-detection of changes to CFLAGS that we already have. Makefile: split prefix flags from GIT-CFLAGS Most of the build targets do not care about the setting of $prefix (or its derivative variables), but will be rebuilt if the prefix changes. For most setups this doesn't matter (they set prefix once and never change it), but for a setup which puts each branch or version in its own prefix, this unnecessarily causes a full rebuild whenever the branc is changed. Makefile: generate Perl header from template file Currently, the generated Perl script headers are emitted by commands in the Makefile. This mechanism restricts options to introduce alternative header content, needed by Perl runtime prefix support, and obscures the origin of the Perl script header. Change the Makefile to generate a header by processing a template file and move the header content into the "perl/" subdirectory. The generated header content will now be stored in the "GIT-PERL-HEADER" file. This allows the content of the Perl header to be controlled by changing the path of the template in the Makefile. Makefile: detect when PYTHON_PATH changes When make is run, the python scripts are created from *.py files that are changed to use the python given by PYTHON_PATH. And PYTHON_PATH is set by default to /usr/bin/python on Linux. This is nice except when you run make another time setting a different PYTHON_PATH, because, as the python scripts have already been created, make finds nothing to do. The goal of this patch is to detect when the PYTHON_PATH changes and to create the python scripts again when this happens. To do that we use the same trick that is done to track other variables like prefix, flags, tcl/tk path and shell path. We update a GIT-PYTHON-VARS file with the PYTHON_PATH and check if it changed. Makefile: update scripts when build-time parameters change Currently, running: make SHELL_PATH=/bin/bash && make SHELL_PATH=/bin/sh will not rebuild any shell scripts in the second command, leading to incorrect results when building from an unclean working directory. build dashless "bin-wrappers" directory similar to installed bindir The new bin-wrappers directory contains wrapper scripts for executables that will be installed into the standard bindir. It explicitly does not contain most dashed-commands. The scripts automatically set environment variables to run out of the source tree, not the installed directory. This will allow running the test suite without dashed commands in the PATH. It also provides a simplified way to test run custom built git executables without installing them first. bin-wrappers also contains wrappers for some test suite support executables, where the test suite will soon make use of them. bugreport: add tool to generate debugging info Teach Git how to prompt the user for a good bug report: reproduction steps, expected behavior, and actual behavior. Later, Git can learn how to collect some diagnostic information from the repository. If users can send us a well-written bug report which contains diagnostic information we would otherwise need to ask the user for, we can reduce the number of question-and-answer round trips between the reporter and the Git contributor. Users may also wish to send a report like this to their local "Git expert" if they have put their repository into a state they are confused by. builtin: add git-check-mailmap command Introduce command check-mailmap, similar to check-attr and check-ignore, which allows direct testing of .mailmap configuration. As plumbing accessible to scripts and other porcelain, check-mailmap publishes the stable, well-tested .mailmap functionality employed by built-in Git commands. Consequently, script authors need not re-implement .mailmap functionality manually, thus avoiding potential quirks and behavioral differences. Add column layout skeleton and git-column A column option string consists of many token separated by either a space or a comma. A token belongs to one of three groups: - enabling: always, never and auto - layout mode: currently plain (which does not layout at all) - other future tuning flags git-column can be used to pipe output to from a command that wants column layout, but not to mess with its own output code. credentials: add "cache" helper If you access repositories over smart-http using http authentication, then it can be annoying to have git ask you for your password repeatedly. We cache credentials in memory, of course, but git is composed of many small programs. Having to input your password for each one can be frustrating. credentials: add "store" helper This is like "cache", except that we actually put the credentials on disk. This can be terribly insecure, of course, but we do what we can to protect them by filesystem permissions, and we warn the user in the documentation. This is not unlike using .netrc to store entries, but it's a little more user-friendly. Instead of putting credentials in place ahead of time, we transparently store them after prompting the user for them once. env--helper: new undocumented builtin wrapping git_env_*() We have many GIT_TEST_* variables that accept a <boolean> because they're implemented in C, and then some that take <non-empty?> because they're implemented at least partially in shellscript. Add a helper that wraps git_env_bool() and git_env_ulong() as the first step in fixing this. This isn't being added as a test-tool mode because some of these are used outside the test suite. Part of what this tool does can be done via a trick with "git config" added in 83d842dc8c ("tests: turn on network daemon tests by default", 2014-02-10) for test_tristate(), i.e.: git -c magic.variable="$1" config --bool magic.variable 2>/dev/null But as subsequent changes will show being able to pass along the default value makes all the difference, and we'll be able to replace test_tristate() itself with that. The --type=bool option will be used by subsequent patches, but not --type=ulong. I figured it was easy enough to add it & test for it so I left it in so we'd have wrappers for both git_env_*() functions, and to have a template to make it obvious how we'd add --type=int etc. if it's needed in the future. Introduce `range-diff` to compare iterations of a topic branch This command does not do a whole lot so far, apart from showing a usage that is oddly similar to that of `git tbdiff`. And for a good reason: the next commits will turn `range-branch` into a full-blown replacement for `tbdiff`. At this point, we ignore tbdiff's color options, as they will all be implemented later using diff_options. Since f318d739159 (generate-cmds.sh: export all commands to command-list.h, 2018-05-10), every new command *requires* a man page to build right away, so let's also add a blank man page, too. checkout: split part of it to new command 'restore' Previously the switching branch business of 'git checkout' becomes a new command 'switch'. This adds the restore command for the checking out paths path. Similar to git-switch, a new man page is added to describe what the command will become. The implementation will be updated shortly to match the man page. A couple main differences from 'git checkout <paths>': - 'restore' by default will only update worktree. This matters more when --source is specified ('checkout <tree> <paths>' updates both worktree and index). - 'restore --staged' can be used to restore the index. This command overlaps with 'git reset <paths>'. - both worktree and index could also be restored at the same time (from a tree) when both --staged and --worktree are specified. This overlaps with 'git checkout <tree> <paths>' - default source for restoring worktree and index is the index and HEAD respectively. A different (tree) source could be specified as with --source (*). - when both index and worktree are restored, --source must be specified since the default source for these two individual targets are different (**) - --no-overlay is enabled by default, if an entry is missing in the source, restoring means deleting the entry (*) I originally went with --from instead of --source. I still think --from is a better name. The short option -f however is already taken by force. And I do think short option is good to have, e.g. to write -s@ or -s@^ instead of --source=HEAD. (**) If you sit down and think about it, moving worktree's source from the index to HEAD makes sense, but nobody is really thinking it through when they type the commands. serve: introduce git-serve Introduce git-serve, the base server for protocol version 2. Protocol version 2 is intended to be a replacement for Git's current wire protocol. The intention is that it will be a simpler, less wasteful protocol which can evolve over time. Protocol version 2 improves upon version 1 by eliminating the initial ref advertisement. In its place a server will export a list of capabilities and commands which it supports in a capability advertisement. A client can then request that a particular command be executed by providing a number of capabilities and command specific parameters. At the completion of a command, a client can request that another command be executed or can terminate the connection by sending a flush packet. git-sh-i18n--envsubst: our own envsubst(1) for eval_gettext() Add a git-sh-i18n--envsubst program which is a stripped-down version of the GNU envsubst(1) program that comes with GNU gettext for use in the eval_gettext() fallback. We need a C helper program because implementing eval_gettext() purely in shell turned out to be unworkable. Digging through the Git mailing list archives will reveal two shell implementations of eval_gettext that are almost good enough, but fail on an edge case which is tested for in the tests which are part of this patch. These are the modifications I made to envsubst.c as I turned it into sh-i18n--envsubst.c: * Added our git-compat-util.h header for xrealloc() and friends. * Removed inclusion of gettext-specific headers. * Removed most of main() and replaced it with my own. The modified version only does option parsing for --variables. That's all it needs. * Modified error() invocations to use our error() instead of error(3). * Replaced the gettext XNMALLOC(n, size) macro with just xmalloc(n). Since XNMALLOC() only allocated char's. * Removed the string_list_destroy function. sparse-checkout: create builtin with 'list' subcommand The sparse-checkout feature is mostly hidden to users, as its only documentation is supplementary information in the docs for 'git read-tree'. In addition, users need to know how to edit the .git/info/sparse-checkout file with the right patterns, then run the appropriate 'git read-tree -mu HEAD' command. Keeping the working directory in sync with the sparse-checkout file requires care. Begin an effort to make the sparse-checkout feature a porcelain feature by creating a new 'git sparse-checkout' builtin. This builtin will be the preferred mechanism for manipulating the sparse-checkout file and syncing the working directory. The documentation provided is adapted from the "git read-tree" documentation with a few edits for clarity in the new context. Extra sections are added to hint toward a future change to a more restricted pattern set. submodule: rewrite `module_list` shell function in C Most of the submodule operations work on a set of submodules. Calculating and using this set is usually done via: module_list "$@" | { while read mode sha1 stage sm_path do # the actual operation done } Currently the function `module_list` is implemented in the git-submodule.sh as a shell script wrapping a perl script. The rewrite is in C, such that it is faster and can later be easily adapted when other functions are rewritten in C. git-submodule.sh, similar to the builtin commands, will navigate to the top-most directory of the repository and keep the subdirectory as a variable. As the helper is called from within the git-submodule.sh script, we are already navigated to the root level, but the path arguments are still relative to the subdirectory we were in when calling git-submodule.sh. That's why there is a `--prefix` option pointing to an alternative path which to anchor relative path arguments. checkout: split part of it to new command 'switch' "git checkout" doing too many things is a source of confusion for many users (and it even bites old timers sometimes). To remedy that, the command will be split into two new ones: switch and restore. The good old "git checkout" command is still here and will be until all (or most of users) are sick of it. See the new man page for the final design of switch. The actual implementation though is still pretty much the same as "git checkout" and not completely aligned with the man page. help: move list_config_help to builtin/help Starting in 3ac68a93fd2, help.o began to depend on builtin/branch.o, builtin/clean.o, and builtin/config.o. This meant that help.o was unusable outside of the context of the main Git executable. To make help.o usable by other commands again, move list_config_help() into builtin/help.c (where it makes sense to assume other builtin libraries are present). When command-list.h is included but a member is not used, we start to hear a compiler warning. Since the config list is generated in a fairly different way than the command list, and since commands and config options are semantically different, move the config list into its own header and move the generator into its own script and build rule. For reasons explained in 976aaedc (msvc: add a Makefile target to pre-generate the Visual Studio solution, 2019-07-29), some build artifacts we consider non-source files cannot be generated in the Visual Studio environment, and we already have some Makefile tweaks to help Visual Studio to use generated command-list.h header file. generate-cmds.sh: export all commands to command-list.h The current generate-cmds.sh generates just enough to print "git help" output. That is, it only extracts help text for common commands. The script is now updated to extract help text for all commands and keep command classification a new file, command-list.h. This will be useful later: - "git help -a" could print a short summary of all commands instead of just the common ones. - "git" could produce a list of commands of one or more category. One of its use is to reduce another command classification embedded in git-completion.bash. The new file can be generated but is not used anywhere yet. The plan is we migrate away from common-cmds.h. Then we can kill off common-cmds.h build rules and generation code (and also delete duplicate content in command-list.h which we keep for now to not mess generate-cmds.sh up too much). PS. The new fixed column requirement on command-list.txt is technically not needed. But it helps simplify the code a bit at this stage. We could lift this restriction later if we want to. Makefile: add an explicit rule for building assembly output In the kernel we have a rule for *.c -> *.s files exactly because it's nice to be able to easily say "ok, what does that generate". Here's a patch to add such a rule to git too, in case anybody is interested. It makes it much simpler to just do make sha1_file.s and look at the compiler-generated output that way, rather than having to fire up gdb on the resulting binary. Makefile: Add cover_db_html target Add a target to generate a detailed HTML report for the entire Git codebase using Devel::Cover's cover(1) tool. Output it in cover_db_html instead of the default cover_db, so that it isn't mixed up with our raw report files. The target depends on the coverage-report-cover-db target, it may be run redundantly if it was previously run. But the HTML output won't be affected by running gcov2perl twice, so I didn't try to avoid that small redundancy. This means that if you add a file or directory called "git" (for example) inside a subdirectory, it will be erroneously ignored. This patch was done mechanically with "s/^[^*]/\/&/" with one exception: instead of ignoring gitk-wish, we should gitk-git/gitk-wish (arguably, this should be done in gitk-git/.gitignore, but because that is a subtree merge from elsewhere, this is easier). contrib: add a script to initialize VS Code configuration VS Code is a lightweight but powerful source code editor which runs on your desktop and is available for Windows, macOS and Linux. Among other languages, it has support for C/C++ via an extension, which offers to not only build and debug the code, but also Intellisense, i.e. code-aware completion and similar niceties. This patch adds a script that helps set up the environment to work effectively with VS Code: simply run the Unix shell script contrib/vscode/init.sh, which creates the relevant files, and open the top level folder of Git's source code in VS Code. Makefile: emulate compile in $(HCO) target better Currently, when testing headers using `make hdr-check`, headers are directly compiled. Although this seems to test the headers, this is too strict since we treat the headers as C sources. As a result, this will cause warnings to appear that would otherwise not, such as a static variable definition intended for later use throwing a unused variable warning. In addition, on platforms that can run `make hdr-check` but require custom flags, this target was failing because none of them were being passed to the compiler. For example, on MacOS, the NO_OPENSSL flag was being set but it was not being passed into compiler so the check was failing. Fix these problems by emulating the compile process better, including test compiling dummy *.hcc C sources generated from the *.h files and passing $(ALL_CFLAGS) into the compiler for the $(HCO) target so that these custom flags can be used. Add scripts to generate projects for other buildsystems (MSVC vcproj, QMake) These scripts generate projects for the MSVC IDE (.vcproj files) or QMake (.pro files), based on the output of a 'make -n MSVC=1 V=1' run. This enables us to simply do the necesarry changes in the Makefile, and you can update the other buildsystems by regenerating the files. Keeping the other buildsystems up-to-date with main development. The generator system is designed to easily drop in pm's for other buildsystems as well, if someone has an itch. However, the focus has been Windows development, so the 'engine' might need patches to support any platform. Also add some .gitignore entries for MSVC files. .gitignore: ignore external debug symbols from GCC on macOS When Git is build with a "real" GCC on macOS [1], or at least with GCC installed via Homebrew, and CFLAGS includes the '-g' option (and our default CFLAGS does), then by default GCC writes the debug symbols into external files under '<binary>.dSYM/' directories (e.g. 'git-daemon.dSYM/', 'git.dSYM/', etc.). Update '.gitignore' to ignore these directories, so they don't clutter the output of 'git status'. Furthermore, these build artifacts then won't trigger build failures on Travis CI via b92cb86ea1 (travis-ci: check that all build artifacts are .gitignore-d, 2017-12-31) once one of the following patches updates our CI build scripts to use a real GCC in the 'osx-gcc' build job. [1] On macOS the default '/usr/bin/gcc' executable is not a real GCC, but merely a compatibility wrapper around Clang: $ gcc --version Configured with: --prefix=<...> Apple LLVM version 9.0.0 (clang-900.0.39.2) <...> So even though 'make CC=gcc' does indeed execute a command called 'gcc', in the end Git will be built with Clang all the same.
